Bought a new Winchester Model 70 from Cabela’s. Looked it over in store and all was fine. Got home and went to sight in the scope and the bolt wasn’t sliding smoothly and you could feel a grit sensation. Took the bolt out and there appears to be sand or some kind of gritty powder on the bolt. Anyone know what this might be? Surely it’s not actual sand? I’ve taken a pic and plan to email Winchester tomorrow. Just curious if anyone has experienced this before?

It almost looks like brass shavings. Maybe it’s just me. Inspect you spent shells.

This was before ever firing a round. It’s hard to tell in the pic but it’s a cream colored material. It’s like powdery sand. It’s not gritty on your fingers but binds the action of the bolt.

Did you mount the scope yourself?

If someone used rosin on the scope rings, maybe they got it in the action by mistake.

I didn’t even think of that! The guy at Cabela’s mounted it and it makes sense that the action was smooth before he mounted the scope.

Well I hope it’s that easy for you.

What caliber?

Featherweight?

I’m a bit interested in the featherweights like that.

Have you cleaned the chamber, bolt and barrel?

If the action is glass bedded could be some loose glass from the bedding as well however I would suspect that most of the barrel and action are free floating. Rosin from the scope mounting would be my other guess.

Could it be some type of lapping compound? Did they claim to have lapped the rings?

30-06 featherweight. Other than this issue I love it.

Yes, after this issue I cleaned everything. It’s better but still grinds whatever it is. And the safety is hard to engage.

Is the action glass bedded?

Not that I’m aware of

If it's still gritty, it isn't cleaned well enough.

If the trigger is stiff, take the action off the stock and get in there and clean it really well until you don't feel that any more.

There should only be two or three screws thats securing the stock
