Understood. COVID isn't the issue, though, it's that you have to take a Covid test prior to returning to the US, and if you test negative you have to quarantine in said location. So you are stuck there...just check out the thread if you decide to leave the US.

Again, prayers to your friend.

Bahamas or Belize. Can't go wrong.

Bahamas has more wind so a 6wt might be too light. An 8wt is better. I got away with a 6wt in Belize.

Either choice is good. Good luck and prayers to your friend. Tight lines.

Do you need to borrow gear? Mine is collecting dust and needs a bone or two.

I’m no help on bonefishing, but a buddy that guides in Charleston, SC said he would put you both up and take you fishing for reds and trout if interested.

Small Hope Bay on Andros. I’ve been there many times and they will absolutely take wonderful care of you and your friend.

Tell them in advance you are coming for bonefish. They have several full time guides, but I always request Glister Wallace- I don’t think he is on staff there, but he will guide for them on request. He is an absolute blast to spend the day with, and absolutely will put you on fish (which truthfully isn’t difficult on Andros).

The owner of Small Hope is Jeff - speak to him personally about the reason for the trip - he is a truly good guy and will make sure you have a memorable trip. He may even offer to fly over to FLT and pick you up in his plane, making it much easier on your travels. If you have trouble getting in touch with Jeff, let me know, I can ping him on WhatsApp.

ETA: just read the thread and saw the friend said no on the trip. I hope his fight is filled with joy and laughter to combat his pain. Sounds like a dog is ideal.

I go back and read this post and tear up . Get him on a plane somewhere and help him enjoy the memories. Your money isn’t good in Louisiana so just come fish.

Hi Kemo,

I spoke with him today. He had his first round of Chemo over the weekend. I mentioned your offer to him, and he has some interest. He's worried about his strength at the moment.

I think it's a little early to get 100% serious (because of the fluidity of the disease and treatment), but could you give me a brief rundown of what you are thinking?

And, while your offer is VERY generous, I would make sure you are taken care of.

Here's a pic of my buddy with a big laker from Flaming Gorge.

It's off his a go fund me they set up for him, which I'm NOT posting a link to...

We went two years ago to Belize and stayed at El Pescador. We fished for bonefish, tarpon and permit. They had great guides and everyone in our group had a blast and caught fish. Each boat had 2 fishermen and a guide. Their dinners were great as well. We might go back there this summer.

can you email me at name@yahoo.com?
Fly into either Houston or Lake Charles, I can pickup in lake Charles and get you to hotel or rent and drive to LC. Suggest either casino since they have valet I can pickup with boat on truck. Between now and April we fish for flounder and reds with trout possible when weather cooperates.

@ Kemo.

Cool. Let me touch base with him in a day or two. Yesterday he told me, "I don't think I have the stamina to fish for very long right now." He's lost like 30-40 lbs because he's having trouble eating. That's going to be our biggest challenge in all of this.

Look for an email after I speak with him again.

Went by and saw my buddy and to drop off a care package to his new 3 y/o rescue lab. He looked better than expected, but had lost a ton of weight. We had a good talk. I'm not sure if he's strong enough right now for air travel, but hopefully he'll get some of his strength back. I've got a local trip planned as soon as it warns up.

Thanks everyone.

This one caught me off guard. I had spoken to him last week and he did not tell me how dire things were. Lots of things running through my mind right now.

Fortunately or unfortunately his only living relative is his mom, who's in her late 90's. She was able to fly and see him for a few days as he entered hospice care.

Sorry to hear Lonnie

quote:

I often do not start fishing until the cool of the evening. Then in the Arctic half-light of the canyon, all existence fades to a being with my soul and memories and the sounds of the Big Blackfoot River and a four-count rhythm and the hope that a fish will rise. Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of those rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs

This is a/the quote from "A River Runs Through It". My father read it at his best fishing buds funeral. A piece of your friend will always be at his favorite fishing haunts. An indelible mark on the stream bed and boulders that make up the Green River. It will be a tough thing to do for a while but you can always visit him there.
