Need some help OB.

I need a rod setup for throwing crankbaits. Am I looking for a Med Action around 7’? Seems like a MH rod is tough to throw lighter baits.

Please and thank you.

I don’t throw a ton of crankbaits. I have 2 rods.

Squarebills and lipless - 7’ Medium/Moderate Fast

Deeper divers - 7’3” MH/Moderate

Get a 7'medium moderate. To me that's the best all around for squarebills on up to 10-12' divers. You will lose less fish and get hung up less on a medium moderate rod than anything else.

Personally, I like using a graphite/fiberglass composite rod. There are a few companies that make them, and they have a slower reaction than a straight graphite rod.

For crankbaits and rattletraps I use a duckett medium rod. I use all duckett rods. I'm going to be using a MH in Toledo for deep diving crankbaits because I feel like the medium won't have enough arse for them. But typically I use my medium with a diawa reel.

Length will help with casting distance. I use a 7’ MH mod-fast for squarebills and 3xds, and a 7’6” M moderate for 5xds and up. Accuracy with a squarebill matters so I prefer the little but shorter rod, and the 7’6” will whip the deeper baits a long way.

I will say that sometimes I find myself wishing I had a MH moderate with the bigger cranks. A 6xd and larger loads a medium rod too much, so if your goal is deep cranking you’re gonna want a little bit more rod, but still with the give of a moderate tip.

Most crankbait rods are fairly slow compared to what most are used to. Many companies have introduced fiberglass as crankbait rods because they’re slower than graphite.

7ft is pretty standard.

7' medium falcon with a 5.3 - 6.0 geared baitcaster. I personally love my 100 series Calcutta on this rod, but I rarely throw anything bigger than a 300 series Bandit. Can't speak for deeper/ bigger crankbaits.

Basspro makes cranking rods in light, ML, MH, and heavy which are great actions under $100.

Powell 6ft 8” light cranking paid $59 on sale
6ft 8” custom built lamiglass ML 6-12lb
St croix has a nice one I broke ML 6-12 composite in premier series around $100. Hard to find.

I use a 6.2:1 reel on MH 7ft pole with 17 or 20lb mono for crankbaits and lipless crankbaits.

In my experience the MH rods make it tough to throw light baits.
