It did...and I connected it the way the diagram showed it (or at least I think I did)

From what I have read, tying the red and yellow together is an acceptable thing to do if you don't mind losing your presets each time the battery is turned off. Again that is how they had the previous stereo wired and it worked fine. Otherwise I would need to run a wire from my ignition and connect the yellow to it and just keep the red connected to the existing power wire in the console. Maybe I should try that.

Interesting. Maybe the new radio has a auto cut off for that scenario. Honestly, the only way you're going to fix it is to try a few things. I THINK the red wire is the ignition and the yellow is supposed to be constant power.
I would personally run the red wire to the ignition or master switch, whichever is easier.
Hard to diagnosis without looking at it.

Red is switch
Yellow is constant
Black is negative
Unless something as changed in the radio world
Check your fuses

It is. Check your ground. Ideally, use a voltmeter to check for 12vDC. That really sounds like a bad connection on power or ground. good enough to power it up for a second, but under load it doesn't hold up.
I do this for a living. Shout out to mah boy JTM72.

My head hurts reading this thread.
Boats and Electronics have driven plenty of people crazy.
Good luck.

Are you saying the red and yellow from the radio are hooked up to the same boat wire? If so, that is 100% your problem. They do different things.
Yes but they can be hooked up together if radio is on a switch as opposed to tied to the ignition.

You said your new Sony model name which is easily found online. Need either boat wiring diagram or old sony model (and diagram)

Just let a pro do it ffs. I'm all about doing things yourself, but when it comes to wiring and electronics, and you get in over your head, it's just not smart to continue.

Get a multi-meter and probe the wires after you turn it on. If it still has 12 volts coming into it but the screen remains off, then it's something in the radio unit. Either the fuse on the back of the radio or something internal.

Come on now..12v is harmless, especially when the boat belongs to someone else.

Update the original post. Easy fix. It was a case of having the antenna plugged into the wrong spot which was causing the radio to shut off right away.

How do you plug the antenna into the wrong spot? Not trying to be a smart arse, it's just normally a unique connector

I was just curious. Can't say I haven't made similar mistakes

Man, i installed a stereo one time that would cut off when i rolled the windows up. Still have no clue how i did that.
Speaking of, my last f150, the passenger elec window would only go up if i were doing at least 70 mph. It went down anytime. That shite was annoying.

My roommates passenger window won't work if it's colder than 40deg outside
That's the only bad part of trucks being so computer heavy now

I dont know the technical terms but whatever the connector is for plugging in the speakers to the back of the radio, the antenna had the same connector. I accidentally plugged it into something for subwoofers.
