I used a 30-06 742 for years. Kept it clean and never had a single issue. Very Accurate gun and killed a lot of deer. I think I sold it for about $450 with a pretty good scope on it. That gun is worth about $275 in decent shape.

I'd forgotten that my dad's carbine is in the closet. May have to punch a hole in one with it this year for old times sake. Yes, it has the raised mounts for optional iron sight shooting.

Very good deal, whether it shoots good or not.

They need to be kept very clean and tend to only like certain ammo. Almost all of them will jam alot with certain loads.

Some of them shoot very well and have no problems though. Either way she got a hell of a deal.

I would almost guarantee the it will jamb for that price. They are great guns, but just like it's successor the 7400, it has a flaw of creating an almost microscopic rust pit in the chamber. When fired the bullet expands into that pit and doesn't eject. Remedy, new barrel. If it doesn't jam, make sure your keep a light coat of oil in chamber.

I have one I bought from a friend a few years back. This one is an early 70s model, hardly used. I haven't put a round through it yet.

Not sure if I want to keep it, as I keep hearing these accuracy and jamming stories.

Remington Model 742 .30-06 Woodmaster

My grand pa gave me his when I first starting hunting in Jr high. Its still my one deer rifle I own and use to deer hunt with.

Take it for what its worth but I've never missed a deer with it. I also haven't shot over 120 yard with it either, so I don't know how accurate it is past that mark.

As for the gun jamming. It does. I just push the bolt action forward and that does the trick. Luckily I've never had to make a second shot on a deer. 180 grain tend to drop a deer pretty well.

I wanted one bad after seeing Two Minute Warning. movies, take the worst shooting rifle and use itin a sniper movie. I have heard a million horror stories about them over the years. From accuracy to not firing. And one with see through mounts.....a lot of deer grew old being shot at with that set up.

i can assure you 20 years times 10 deer is 200 and a few pay hunts, so maybe 210 deer were killed with mine

Spotlighting really pumps up the number, eh?

They work much better if you have see through mounts on them

I learned to deer hunt with a .243 Remington 742 with the see through mounts. (Which if you think about it has to be the #2 OB gun of choice after the Judge.)

Scope was surgical precision and the iron sights were for blasting at them when they run by you at a full run.
