For those that reload rifle cartridges. How many rounds will a pound of powder load ? The round is 28 Nosler . Approximately ?

Using one of the recommended loads at 90grns, there's 7000 grn in a lb of powder, so roughly 77 loads per pound for that round

You need slow burning powder for 28 Nosler.
I’m guessing h1000, Retumbo (unicorn dust), rl26 and the like.

Seeing some of them pop up every now and then, but you need to be fast and it’s usually pretty pricey.

Good luck.

Yuuuup 7,000 grs. Per pound. My .17 Ackley Hornet uses around 11.5 grs of powder under a 20 gr. Vmax . I get over 600 reloaded rounds per pound

Other .17 caliber wildcats for comparison

set up email product alerts at places like Midway, Powder Valley, Midsouth Shooters, Natchez, Grafs etc. Be ready to stop what you're doing, get online, and buy it when you see it. Bookmark the pages at these places on your phone. Check them everyday while you're "taking the Browns to the Superbowl" instead of reading TD. You may get lucky.

If there is 2 lbs of RL26 3 hours away, you better go get it. And if they have more get that too if you can afford it. That's been the hardest to get powder in years. I got lucky a few years ago and my LGS got 10 lbs and I bought it all. I haven't seen any since. That stuff is so good if you sprinkle it on your cheerios it'll make your farts go 100 fps faster!

That is unless you'd prefer to pay over 100.00 per lb on Gunbroker. I'm down to 5 lbs myself. My 270 loves it.

In my brief time reloading, I haven't found that powders of similar burn rates give significantly different accuracy results. Maybe my rifle just isn't very picky, but it seems like I get ~ 1-1.5 MOA regardless of powder or primer. The velocity does seem to vary significantly, which makes sense between say RL16 and IMR4831.

Is that generally what yall see? I've just been buying a pound of something, burning it up, and then buying a pound of whatever else I can find thats in the appropriate burn rate range. I haven't been able to get the same thing twice yet and haven't really noticed any difference.

For the most part, if a bullet has a similar speed then it will produce a similar pattern. Pressures can affect that somewhat but I have no way of measuring that.

I bought some powder that I haven’t seen in a while from powder valley.

They have a lot of stuff in stock and free hazmat surely helps, especially with the price powders have reached.

Baton Rouge shooting supply (I think) on 73 near airline has been my go-to. Great little shop.

There is one place here in Memphis that usually has a decent selection but it’s a 40 min drive for me to get there.

Powder valley has free haz mat today only and they have following in stock as of 10:40am:

H1000
Retumbo
H4831sc
50BMG
US869

All these have load data for 28 Nosler
https://www.nosler.com/28-nosler
Hodgdon's burn rate chart puts H1000 adjacent to RL26 if you need to develop an alternate load for flexibility with available supplies.

Yeah, go buy the "extra" RL26 unless you want to finding a new powder 77 rounds later. The RL series of powders have been nearly impossible to find for a couple years now. I've been using RL powders for >30 years, but I'm giving up on RL17. RL 17 has been a wonderful powder for my Rem XP100 in 284 Win, but it's hardly ever available and has become extremely expensive (67/pound at Midway before adding shipping). I can't make myself pony up that kind of money. I use RL 15# a lot, but I've got about 4# of it left. I searched the 'net regarding the extreme prices and unavailability of RL powders. The most interesting claim I found was tied to the war in Ukraine. The Reloder powders are made in Sweden. A lot of the production's been going to Ukraine. What doesn't go to Ukraine goes to other European countries who are stocking up due to their uneasiness for their countries in light of Putin's attack on Ukraine.

ETA: Midway has free shipping for orders>$99 and some of the powders Duckhammer mentioned are in stock. You'll still have to pay a hazardous shipping fee.

It varies w/ the gun. I've got some guns that seem equally accurate w/ nearly any powder, as long as the powder's in the appropriate burning rate. OTOH, I've go some guns where the accuracy varies noticeably w/ a change in powder. When I'm working up a load, I no longer change primers to try and tweak the accuracy.

There'll usually be some lot to lot variation in chamber pressure and velocity in a powder. It's usually not a lot, but it does require at least a limited load w/u when changing lots of powder. Because of this, once I find a good load, I like to buy a 4-8# keg. In 2011, I bought 31# of gunpowder online since there was no shipping or hazard fees. I'm still using powder from that purchase. Some of it should last me a lifetime.
