Release - Index vs. thumb trigger??

In the market for a new release. I’ve used an index trigger my whole life, but recently bought a new bow and sold my old one along with the release.
Now trying to decide whether to get another index or give the thumb trigger a go. I’ve always liked my index release but it seems like everyone is making the change.
Any opinion one way or the other here? Pros and cons appreciated if you’ve used both. Thanks!

I’ve shot an index since day one. Switched to a thumb release after the past season. Sold my index releases

I shot with a wrist/index for a long time. The last eight or so years I’ve shot a thumb. I definitely think the thumb gives me a more consistent shot.

It’s definitely personal preference…I still shoot a Scott index release. The problem I see with most people is they “slap” that trigger with the index finger which makes for a very inconsistent shot. The thing to do is leave your index finger stationary on the trigger and pull your arm back like you would for a thumb release the fire…makes it way more consistent and accurate as your not slapping that trigger when your pin lines up but forced to hold your pin on target until it fires…I know it sounds confusing but it works.

Switched to a thumb a few months ago. HATED it at first. Learned how to shoot it, and my groups have never been tighter.
Bought a used Stanford of ArcheryTalk for about $100. Crispest trigger I have ever felt, firearms included.

Get both.
Whenever I get a bad habit, a switch of release type always works to get me re-centered.
I once had a thumb tension release - kind of a 1st gen back tension release - I smacked myself in the face a few times and lost several arrows with that disaster.

Ive been slapping the trigger and fighting some target panic lately with my index release. Talked to Sammy and Ronnie about switching to a thumb release and both said I'd be looking at adding a half inch to my draw length and cutting some new arrows. Tough pill to swallow after picking up a dozen Axis 340's at the end of last season. If I could start fresh I'd 100% go thumb release.

What’s your dl and how long are your arrows now?

All that panic and sensitive setting of the index trigger, them days are over when you buy :
Stan Extinction 2, or Carter Like Mike 2.
The Extinction is now upgraded to the strike x, but i just found a leftover stock of Extinction 2, and at a great price. I have two now, one for backup.
These 2 releases are a whole different world. No trigger travel , and not necessary to set it sensitive to get that no trigger travel.
I say get the web connect version, and set the length so the trigger falls in the second fold joint of your finger.
Whole nuther world. Trust me, that panic will be wiped out.
I shot a thumb release since the mid 1990's.
After the Stan Extinction 2, i will not go back to that.
You will get a thumb release, and will sense that trigger moving, and your mind will panic once again. Thats not the answer.

With the length set as i said, 2nd fold joint, you can do what some call the 4 finger wave. You fold in all 4 fingers simutaneously, like your waving . It triggers as a surprise. Your mind won't anticipate.

I second this release for an index. There is ZERO creep in the trigger and if you set the tension correctly it can be used similar to a back tension release - if you want it to. Can't recommend this release enough.

Target = thumb
Hunting = index
Hunting = index

I've used all of them. Developed a severe case of target panic from index releases. I then went with a thumb trigger release and it cured my target panic for a while until my brain realized it could punch that trigger just as easily. Now i strictly use a back tension. Like Levi Morgan says, "if you can use a back tension while hunting, maybe you shouldn't be taking those shots".
I've killed a pile of deer with my back tension release and i can't think of anytime where i didn't get a shot because of it.

Not sure what you are laughing at. There are a ton of bow hunters that use back tension releases.
With respect to his comment, he was referencing folks that use back tension while target shooting and then switch to some other style to hunt with because they think they can get off a quicker shot in the heat of the moment.
