I have just inherited some property with a lot of grass to cut. There's lot of trees and bushes in the yard so I figured a zero turn would be the best option. I was thinking John Deere, but I was told their parts are very expensive compared to other brands. I have a coworker who had a Gravely and had a ton of problems with it. But I've heard other people speak highly of Gravely. Other brands I'm considering are Husqvarna, Toro and Cub Cadet. I'd like to keep it around $3000 if I can. Any suggestions or experiences you'd like to share?

If you have a lot of grass to cut, I'd recommend spending more than 3k honestly. You'd do well going for an "estate" or "semi commercial" model. Scag, hustler, exmark, gravely will all work. Buy a brand you can have serviced close to where you live.

If you have a lot of land, you need to get a commerical grade, whatever brand you choose.

Exmark makes a great mower, also take a look at a grasshopper. My dad runs a lawn service and has run both of these zero turns for years and hasn't had any major issues.

I recommend JD! I cut about 4 acres with a 54" commercial Z810A and it has almost 700 hrs on it. Other than 2 drive belts it has been trouble free. The belt failed because of operator error not use.
whatever you get, get commercial grade!!!!!

If it's over 2 acres no brand of mower under $3,000 is going to last you. In this class they have aluminum spindles no matter what brand you get.

I would look for a good used prosumer unit with Steel spindles.

Some brands I would start looking at. I wouldn't go below these in product lines.
These give you a good bang for your buck.

Cub Cadet I would start at z force series $3,499 (steel spindles)
Husqvarna MZ
Toro timecutter MX series

In exmark the lower end products are so so for the money. You can do better in other brands for the money.

I'd ballpark about 8-10 acres

Yea I guess I'll have to spend a little more than I was hoping to. I don't want something that's going to give me trouble every time I want to cut grass.

Yeah dude you're going to want a full commercial. New will run at least 8k. Or you could pick up a used with maybe 7-800 hours for 5ish.

I'd get a 60"

I'd go as far as suggesting a Kubota diesel ZTR. Can be had for about 8k with low hours and will last 4-5000 hours. And it will mow grass like you can't imagine.

Guess I might have to dig a little deeper in the bank account than I was hoping to lol.

$3K for 8acres will not last long. Get a solid used commercial if you cant fit a new commercial in your budget. Scag or Hustler just my .02c

I bought a Husqvarna Zero Turn about five years ago. Seemed to work on it more than I mowed with it.

Spent around $5K on a Kubota last summer. Very happy with it, so far.

Oh, yeah 8 acres you need to bump up to $7k to start to around $10k. You will need a unit with a larger transmission, suspension system (for your body & keep the unit from breaking quickly), and comfortable seat.

Cub cadet Pro Z 700 and Pro Z 900
Huqvarna P-ZT units
Ferris
Scag
Toro 5000 series
Kubota

You might be able to find a used unit. Only problem is most of them will have a lot of wear and tear on them.

You will burn up a ZT series transmission in a prosumer unit quicker than a $20 hooker in the gehtto will.

You can buy a small commerical grade for around 4K, but for 8-10 acres, I think you need something larger than that.

For 8-10 acres, you might be better off with a tractor and finishing mower

That's a lot of grass for a zero turn and at least the tractor can help with other tasks

Oh damn, you're not going to want a consumer model, which is what you'll get for 3k. I have a hustler raptor SD, which is fine for my 1.2 acres, but anything over 3-4 i would get ready to get a commercial mower, and get ready to spend $6k plus.

ETA -are you really going to mow the entire thing?

If you're interested, Cub Cadet has a Father's Day sale going on (started Monday). I was quoted $2700 out the door with a $200 mail in rebate for a 52" (I think) with a Kohler engine.

Looks like a pretty decent machine and has a good warranty.
