Anyone recommend where to purchase pecan trees within driving distance of Baton Rouge (within 50-75 miles)

Many of the nurseries carry trees but not necessarily pecan.

TY in advance!

Native for wildlife, or good ones like humans like to eat?

I would think the bigger nurseries could order them for you, how many do you need?

Looking for at least 8. Likely will order the Caddo or Houma which are most resistant to scab disease.

You can order "bare root" trees online for a big savings.

quote:

The LSU AgCenter recommends several cultivars for home planting. These choices produce excellent quality pecans and have good to excellent resistance to scab disease. Select from the Elliot, Candy, Sumner, Houma, Caddo, Oconee and Melrose cultivars, as they are better suited for home landscapes.

Pecans must be cross-pollinated to produce well. Generally, there are enough pecan trees in an area for this to be accomplished if you plant just one tree.
Pecans are wind pollinated, and the pollen can travel some distance. However, if there are no pecan trees in your area, you should plant two different types -- Elliot, Candy, Sumner or Melrose with either Houma, Caddo or Oconee.

Are you looking for grafted trees? If so, there was someone on craigslist selling Elliott trees at $25 each in the Baton Rouge area.

The guy I was getting them from got out the biz last year. So, I started grafting my own. That takes 3 years before one has a grafted tree to transplant.

I already have Desire, Stuart, and Success trees on the property. They cross pollinate each other but all have the scab disease. Slowly losing them over the years. Figured I would replace them with the Caddo and/or Houma. Not so much worried about production as I am with just a healthy looking tree. Not doing the graft route. Saw the TyTy website and interested in the 9-10 foot trees. About $145 a tree plus shipping. Just thought I might find someone local that I can just go and pick up.

Contact the local LSU Cooperative Extension. They may be able to give you the name of some nurseries based on your size and variety preferences.

There is a tree nursery in the Opelousas/Washington area who carries a larger selection of varieties. I can't think of the name but maybe someone else on the OB knows the name and where it's located. May be within your 75 mile range....

ETA: See the next post--Clyde Hollaway is the place I was thinking about (but it's not close to Opelousas and further from BR but likely worth the trip). Thanks Geauxtiga

A little farther than you asked but Clyde Hollaway in Forest Hill usually has some.

There are several in that area that carry pecans. Can't remember off hand but not hard to find.

And old Clyde Holloway died a couple months ago. He was a good guy. I'm sure the nursery is still open.

We have about a 400 tree orchard in Pointe Coupee Parish. Elliots are great producers and scab resistant. Any desirable, cape fear, papershell or other "large pecan" is very suspectible to scab in the humidity of Louisiana. We are about to start cutting down about 50 of those trees.

Texas A&M AG center. World leader in pecan tree research. They will even accept soil samples from you and suggest best possible sub species to plant. Good Luck
