The glock can't second strike a round like the HK, and the hammer allows the gun to be customized for trigger weights. Also, the hammer is a safety of sorts.

Wow... looks awesome. I've always thought the glock was the way to go, but that looks a little nicer.
It costs twice as much.

I think the double action is the safest and most reliable platform possible. Point and shoot. You can ride your thumb on the hammer when holstering the pistol, so there's no oh shot I shot myself risk.
Yep, and long trigger pulls. Safer, maybe. More reliable, not sure about that. I think basic trigger discipline is an easy remedy to not pulling the trigger while holstering.

Reliable in overall function, no levers or things to do between pointing and shooting. Reliable for me to operate in other words.

glock 22 or glock 17 If you just want cheap get a hi-point/
Or Glock 23 same .40 round as the 22 but medium size frame, very comfortable for all but really huge hands, easier to carry than the 22 if needed. You give up 3 rounds, but if you can't get out of trouble with 13 rounds you probably should not have been their in the first place.

No levers or things on the Glock, but to each his own

Don't think I want to be around Gumps making gun purchases right now. I'd give it another week.

They discontinued the caliber I wanted, so I was forced back a model. The Raven holster works awesome with the slide release levers.

Ruger SR 1911 .45 ACP is a great pistol. And yes you can conceal carry it. Just get a Colt 1911 angle carry holster. I carry one every day.

Love my p226. I think the MK 25 is the gun the seals prefer which is a variation of the 226, not for sure on that exact model though just posting off the top of my head

You need a revolver. If you want a large frame gun, Ruger GP100 is the one you need. If you want a smaller frame, get a .38 Special - check out the Ruger LCR. I'd even suggest starting with a .22LR revolver and moving up from there if you can afford buying more than one gun over time.
Learn to use it, and then decide if you want to move up to a semi-automatic.
For home defense only, get a shotgun and use the appropriate load (sheetrock doesn't stop much).
Do your research. Look for a range that has a beginner's gun safety course and will let you rent guns to shoot at the range.
No shame in taking a gun safety course.

+1, especially for first time owners or those who did not grow up around guns.
