Recommend a good spinning rod for bull reds
All my bass stuff has worked fine in the bay with minor tweaks (line size, etc). However, I'm going to be doing some surf fishing next week and I want to be appropriately prepared for potentially larger fish, should I be so fortunate.

Is there a good quality, economical ($50-75ish) rod yall might recommend? Should I get a 2 piece 8-9 ft rod? Would 7'6 be sufficient?

In that price range, or maybe a little more, the Falcon XG Coastal rods are really good for the price range.

If you want a little cheaper, any of the Academy brand, AllStar rods will work just fine.

Anything 7’+ will be fine. I typically like 7-3 range myself.

Is there a certain power/action that you like?

If you want to be able to completely kick his arse and not worry about it, get one of the cheap offshore rods from academy or cabels. Any of them will work fine. They're cheap, like $30.

My favorite I have a few of them
Ugly stick salmon/steel head spin 8'6" or 9'. In 15-40lb & 12-25lb
ugly stick 8'6" 2piece

Ugly stick inshore select 7'6"
ugly stick inshore select
Ugly stick elite spinning 7'6"
ugly stick elite spinning

I order online through ugly stick or online 3rd party where you can find them in stock more often. But shore fishing for reds, blues, trout have fun with lady fish. Being able to tossing a 3/4 spoon ungodly distances with 10-15 braid u can just do so much more with a long pole.

But understand I like this for shore/wade fishing or boat with no ttop (no over head obstructions places to get hung up whiping a 8.5' pole around)

I typically use a Med/fast but I am usually after trout more than anything.

Sounds like you want something a little heavier so A MedHeavy/Fast would be just fine as well.

Ive really been liking the Castaway rods. My favorite right now is the Taranis. Kind of lightweight for Bull reds but I do it.

The reel choice, drag and capacity, is more important than the rod, especially if you’re going for a heavy action.

I've got a couple reels already that i'm happy with-just need to get a rod that can handle chunking a 3+ oz rig and whatever fish will bite said rig.

In that price range?
Ugly Stik Tiger Elite (not the jigging version)
In my experience they are the best value out there and tough as hell.

H2O Express has a 10 ft surf rod that is excellent. $50 at academy.

Can cast a country mile.

I personally wouldn’t spend a bunch on a surf rod that’ll throw 3 oz. Sensitivity is worth it for plastics and bass, but for a bull red it’s not like you need a lot of feedback. Any rod that will throw that weight is going to handle a red. I’d go to Bass Pro or equivalent, find the length you want with that weight rating and just get a store brand, Ugly Stik or something similar.

Penn has some nice combos (Fierce and Pursuit 2) that are reasonable, I got em for mangroves/Bull Reds), pretty sure they are from Academy.

I normally use the Falcon XG rods for inshore which have enough backbone for reds.

I bought a Cadence 7’ med/heavy fast action Rod after seeing it recommended in a thread a few months ago. So far so good.
