I've got 2 30lb tanks that are over 10 years old. 1 is fine, 1 has a leaky valve. Someone told me they thought there was a place in Baton Rouge that you could bring them and have them recertified and get a new valve so they can legally be filled again, but didn't know where it was. Anyone know of a place like that? It'll cost me around $150 to get 2 new tanks. It'd be nice of I could recertify mine for a fraction of the $. They're on my camper.

I've had it done here in Ut, it was a very easy process. It cost be about $10-$15 per tank IIRC. Most big propane supply companies should be able to do it. Just call them and ask. You'll have to repeat the process ever 5 years I think.

Oh and...

Ferrellgas on Airline should be able to recertify them. They have been super busy lately, so I'm not sure if they have a person working at the office right now, but it is a fairly quick process. I'd give them a call to see if they can do it.

I know it doesn't help if you're in BR, but LaSalle gas in New Iberia recertified a couple large ones for me. I don't even think they charged extra. They just do a visual inspection, slap a sticker on em, and refill.

I would think TnT Gas and Supply / Welding would recertify those tanks for you.
River Road north of the state capitol.

Amerigas is another company to contact (a competitor to Ferrellgas).

Amerigas' website says they do tank recertification. Amerigas on Scenic Hwy

Depending on where you are in the BR area, both are on Airline Hwy: Amerigas is in north of US190 in Scotlandville and Ferrellgas is south of Women's Hospital in St. George.

LOUISIANA FIRE EXTINGUISHER on Athens Ave. does. They recerted my large oxygen cyl for $35. In my opinion you should go ahead with the new ones. Your going to spend more than 1/2 the price to have 2, at least 10 yr old tanks recertified and put them in your camper. I hope you understand that the pressure test is only a sure thing the day the test is done and in no way assures you that ir]t will last another 10 years. Think carefully where those tanks are going to be stored, your camper with family and friends depending on their integrity.

good luck and happy camping.

I have not found a way to dispose of an out of date tank. I was told at a refill place (hardware store) the recyclers won't take them because propane has penetrated the metal at the molecular level and the few molecules of propane classifies the tanks as hazardous materials (or maybe just unsafe because of the propane contamination). The hardware store would accept an old tank when purchasing a new tank but the old tanks were stacking up behind the store.

Only way I have found to dispose of an out of date tank is to use a tank exchange service like Blue Rhino as they have the facilities to recertify or dispose of old tanks.

If anyone has a better solution, please share.
