My only option (and I'm not an electrician so not even sure if it is an actual option) is to run wiring from an existing outlet to the shed. I want to power a floodlight, an interior LED strip and a golf cart charger. Maybe a charger for my sons power wheel. Not much more than that.

1) is running from an outlet an option?
2) if it is, can it run a golf cart charger?
3) if so, can it run the lights as well?

There is no way to run it to our box, because it's in the center of the house and there is a story above it. I really didn't think this out when we built, should have had them put it on an exterior wall.

You likely won’t be able to power all of those things at once, and it’s really a poor option to begin with. You need to run a new line from the breaker box. Time to call an electrician

I assume you're on a slab?

I wouldn't recommend it

probably, whats the amperage? Whats the amps already on the line and whats the breaker amperage?

probably, LED lights barely pull power

Some things you need to consider are:

What is currently on the circuit with the outlet you want to tap into?
How long of a run will it be?
What is the draw of the charger and light.

I tied into an external outlet to power my outdoor grilling area but it only contains a ceiling fan, tv, and two outlets.

What else is on that circuit already? I'm going to assume all exterior outlets? How many? Bathrooms or other gfi on same circuit is possible as well.

Figure out your current load on that breaker and then you will know if you have any room to add to it.

How much draw is the golf cart charger? light?

How to properly add to it then is the question.

This is the correct answer.

Running a new line from the box isn't hard but you said you weren't an electrician so make the phone call.

You might be able to save a little money by doing the actual running of the line (thru the walls, buried to the shed and then to the outlet location) yourself. Connecting the line to the breaker box is what you want the electrician to do unless you know exactly what you're doing. You could probably even connect the wire to the outlet yourself also.

Where is the electric meter on the exterior of the house in relation to the breaker box and shed?

Electric meter is about as far away from the shed location as you can get with where I'm wanting to put it, however, I'm not oppposed to a long run of wire if it gets the job done. Breaker box is in between them. Unless there is some technique I'm unaware of, I don't see how it's possible to run anything new to the breaker box without tearing out sheetrock and insulation. None of that is worth it to me. I'd rather just run a heavy duty extension cord for the golf cart charger and use a flashlight.

I have never determined what's on the same circuit but I can find out.

I was in the same situation as you. I cried once and had an electrician run a new line to my shop. Glad I did it right the first time. You're asking for problems if you try the cheap way out.

I’m not worried about the money. I’ll pay for whatever to do it right except it’s not worth ripping into Sheetrock and all that. If that’s the only right way to do it then I just won’t do it.

Slab

I have a couple circuit breakers at my meter for things like my sprinkler system, then I have the main breaker box in my house. What they were saying is that if the meter is an option you may be able to add a breaker there. No idea on the cost of that though. Then just run wire through Conduit on the side of your house to your shed.

Check by your meter and see if you have external breakers. You may or may not have a primary panel there that actually feeds the panel in the house. If you do have a panel there, that’s where you want to feed from. Go bigger than what you expect right now. You didn’t say how big your shed was, but the best option would e to put a small sub panel in the shed. Future you will be glad you did. .

If you don’t have a main panel by the meter pan, then I really don’t know what to do. I’m not a residential election and I don’t really know the tricks they do inside of the walls, as well as the NEC.

Ahh gotcha. Alright I’ll look when I get home. Off the top of my head I’m not sure. There’s a bunch of stuff near the meter. Att box, water heater, meter etc

Thanks everyone.

You can also run wires between floors. This will obviously depending on your access and what type of trusses you have, their layout, etc. to how hard it would be.

If all else fails you can look into getting solar panels and a battery. I am considering this temporarily for my shed. Should be able to run all that with the proper set up.
