Our little city has gone from zero about 10 years ago(guessing) to well over 100 that move about from place to place in the city. Were these ever wild? Why do they stay? Why don't other goose species stay? I may have more as you guys teach.

Water, food, and lack of predators will make them stay.

A healthy population of big water snakes, birds of prey, foxes, they'll leave.

From a site called courier press, so take with a grain of salt. Have also seen them take over in lakes/ponds around south MS and LA where they previously didn’t exist.

quote:

Most of the nonmigratory "urban geese," however, are actually a supersized subspecies of common Canada geese. Called giant Canada geese, the species was once presumed extinct. When a tiny population discovered in the 1960s was coddled into reproduction, numbers bounced back, and giants were reintroduced in urban areas. What happened next surprised many. Giant Canadas, larger and lazier than their smaller cousins, prefer not to migrate. So mostly they don't, resulting in far-reaching ramifications: If adults don't migrate and teach their offspring the route, youngsters become permanent homebodies. As a result, these sizeable flocks of urban geese don't know how to migrate.

We have a good hundred that don’t migrate near my home and just bounce from neighborhood lake to lake. Had 40 of those big bastards in my back yard once. MS has a resident Canada goose season to cull them. Not uncommon to see flocks just chilling in cow pastures around here. Been thinking of putting some feed in the back yard and sniping one with the pellet rifle

I’m not sure, but I’ve heard that if they’re not migratory, they can be eliminated without limit any time, any place. Santa Maria golf course is overrun with them. Kinda hard to putt thru goose crap.

Canada geese stopped migrating south many decades ago. (They used to migrate to south Louisiana until the 1950s)
After the Canada’s stopped migrating here, Rockefeller refuge in Southwest Louisiana developed a resident flock of Canada’s. With the goal of increasing the population to a huntable size.
Mission accomplished

Gove you a reason to have one of those bad arse air .25 caliber rifles.

Watched a guy on YouTube killing hogs with them shooting them I'm the head.

I have heard they taste awful . Never tried one. I figure if they were any good there wouldn’t be any down here left to eat.

There used to be an article about this online, but I can't find it anymore. I think they started baiting them up north at some preserve. It completely halted the migration over time.

Mallards and Greenwing teal are next.

Change "urban geese" to "urban people" and the article is still correct

They are fine. They aren't a teal or pintail but they taste pretty good. They are an utter pain in the arse to pluck though. A whole grater Canada goose takes a solid half hour to pluck well. Maybe more.

Treat breast like an oversized duck breast and the legs like mini turkey legs. The legs make awesome gumbo. Tons of flavor and do well when cooked down.

Not sure if they were once migratory but I do know the far left house at the front of landmark facing the bayou has them nest in the bushes in his front yard. They’re some mean mfers. Ask me how I know.

Cube breast for kabobs. Soak in beer over night. Skewer and grill to medium rare. Difficult to tell its not beef filet.

Not sure if serious. In case you are, Canada's are migratory waterfowl subject to Federal regulations. Limits, seasons, etc are set by states within Federal guidelines. Shooting with rifles or air rifles is illegal.
