You obviously aren’t a car salesman then.

Personally if it were my business and you came in tossing the term illegal around like that without knowing WTF you are talking about I would have you escorted off the property immediately.

The dealer can't legally sell a deleted truck
Wrong
They cant knowingly do so but there is no inspection requirement, it is simply a wink and nod deal for everyone from the state to the purchaser and everyone in between.
Dealers sell deleted trucks every single day.

I’m surprised a dealership is actually selling that truck, if you get any fines while driving it let the dealership pay them.

There are actually cases where they traced the delete back to the person that actually deleted the truck several owners back, including the dealership...
The original owner that deleted it was responsible for the cost of bringing the truck back into compliance...rare scenario, but it could happen to you

Thanks for the tip ! I'm in Covington, is there anyone in this area or Slidell that does injectors?--Thanks

Maybe in Mississippi.. I was told last week by 3 different Texas dealerships to take the delete kit off my truck before I brought it in because they can't legally sell it for on road use..

My brother bought a deleted dodge from a dealer no problems and they do the warranty work

I've done a few sets myself on my (now my sons) 2001 LB7, Labor hours are crazy at a shop, they are a PIA...and while you are that deep in there, you'll want to set valve lash. I recommend changing the 8 rail to injector lines and resealing the injector cups...only because it's a job you don't want to do twice. but definitely go SAC nozzles not VOC
You can read up on some of the diesel forums to see if you want to attempt it yourself or get recommendations on where to take it...Closest DMAX specialist I believe would be in lake charles...KORY Willis is his name runs PPEI [link=(www.PPEI.com)]LINK[/link]if the EPA hasn't shut him down for doing deletes

Because they were made aware, did they ask or did you just tell? I bet I know the answer to that one.
How many folks do you know that have unmolested and un tuned diesels?
Think about this for a second, even if only 50% of folks modify that means 50% of what is available on the secondary market is modified.
If testing ever becomes required prior to resale reinstalling this garbage would be a multi billion dollar business.

So, what is the big deal of deleting the program on a diesel? To me, that is crazy. Still running my Dodge stock and now have 237K on it. Never been in the shop at all other then a water pump and two small hoses on one of the after cooler.

So let me ask this to the people that have deleted diesels....Have you ever needed to reinstall the tune? My last diesel was deleted, and while the shop gave me the programmer with the tune on it, I never had to use it in the 4 years I had the truck. The dealer doesn't have the programmer with the tune that was used, but the truck seems to run fine. Not having the programmer in case the tune gets deleted is the main thing holding me back. Do I really need it?

In my case I was having a lot of issues with the dpf and egr. The dealer replaced it all before the warranty ran out but the truck would go into limp mode and throw codes for the same thing. Brought it in to the dealer and the actual service manager at the dealership told me I'd continue to have trouble with it unless I deleted it and he gave me the number to a shop that does deletes. I had it all deleted and told them I didn't want any "rolling coal" or none of that nonsense, just a dependable diesel truck to pull my camper without worrying. I drove that truck another 165k miles without ever having a single issue. Only reason I don't have it now is because of a wreck.
Some younger baws delete them to make them sound cool or blow out black smoke, but you also delete them to make them more reliable. Not having to deal with the def fluid is also a plus.

You do not NEED the programmer at all.
The only way you would ever need it, is if some dealership just went and flashed a factory tune to the truck. The truck is deleted you can't have a factory tune.
The truck I presume is also out of warranty so flashing back to stock before a service will not net a benefit anyway. I would just make anyone servicing the truck aware that
it is deleted, and to not flash any tune to the truck.
Everything use to be sold as "off road/race only" parts. About a year or two ago the EPA to my knowledge put an end to major exhaust companies selling "delete kits".
Not sure if EPA followed thru with restrictions on the tuning part. However, most reputable and major tuners quit selling tunes for deleted trucks out of fear of being hit by the EPA.
So that said, you will be pressed to find any reputable tuning company that will sell you tunes for a deleted truck. You'd be relegated to the used market mainly for this.
Personally if this were me.
I would prefer to buy a deleted truck only if it came with the programmer or EZ-lynk with the tunes for the delete.
I would not be worried about a factory tune, you can get that anywhere. It's gaining access to the required tunes you need since the truck is deleted that is the issue.

For the reason of just in case some dealer or mechanic erases the delete tune?
I can't see myself ever bringing it to the dealer for work, since it's out of warranty. I have a local mechanic that does all my work that I can't do myself, which isn't much.
I know it's hard to find these days, buy say I know someone who knows someone that could get me a programmer with a tune on it. I could simply load that on to it and then I'd have the programmer. It would cost me a good bit for that though I'm sure.

exactly. That is the only way you would need it.
Unless something crazy off the wall happens and say like the ECU just failed and needed to be replaced.

Yes, if you know someone that is in the loop they can still get their hands on tunes. I mean they are still out there and can be bought the market his huge, you just wont see big companies advertising it. More of a call and ask for them type situation.
So yes, if you purchased some sort of hand held programmer for that truck with tunes built for it being deleted then it will work fine.
IE:
Your ecu goes out and is replaced or dealer unknowingly flashes stock tune. You would connect hand held device with tune(s) to OBD port, and just flash that tune over the factory tune. You don't NEED the factory tune. Nor does any big company to build you a tune(s) for that truck.

Thanks for all your info. You've been a big help! I think I'm gonna try to negotiate on the truck this week. If I bought a diesel I'd want it deleted anyway and that would cost me a couple grand, this one I'd just need the programmer and tune because the labor is already done. In reality it'll probably just run fine as is forever, I just want the programmer for piece of mind.

Just here to vouch that Southern686 and Peppridge are giving good advice in this thread.

You are wrong.. while talking to the salesman each ask me if my truck was deleted.. I said no. Each basically said well if it is make sure to bring it in stock because it kills resale.. we have to buy the parts to return it to stock so we can sell it legally..
It took me an hour to put the truck back together. Anyone with a little common sense can do it..
