My “tree” rifle is a custom nosler m48 in 28 nosler with a 26” proof research barrel and a 4-24x52 leupold scope. My suppressor is still in suppressor jail, but my rifle will be even longer when I get it. It’s probably not the best gun for the job, but it hasn’t let me down yet. I swung that long sucker around on an 8pt at 10 yards last year
I feel like you’re over complicating it. Just shoot whatever rifle you like and what you’re comfortable with. If you’re just looking to spend $5k, a $5k rifle will surely get the job done. Mine does for me.

let’s try to keep it in the 5-7k range, if possible.

Mauser M12
Sako 100
Blazer r8

Anyone of these in a walnut stock.

those type guns aren't purposeful at 100 yds. Any $500 gun at academy will do anything you need at 100 yards. At some point, your investment is meaningless.

And I can't begin to imagine cleaning 80-100 deer a year.

Whenever I hunt in the woods with thicker brush and no real long shot opportunities I take one of these:

-Marlin 336 30-30
-Ruger Mark II 257 Roberts (International/Mannlicher stock)
-Marlin 1895 45-70 suppressed with a silencerco hybrid
-Ruger American 300BO suppressed with a silencerco omega 30 cal.

I love all of these options for the woods. Its tough to find ammo these days for the 257 at reasonable prices if at all, but its a great caliber. Put decent glass on any of these and they are great options for shorter woods shots.

You’re shooting a cannon. Follow up shots aren’t likely

But you could have an ultra sweet open sight express rifle on that budget, like a heym express or a mauser 98.

Cool rifles make hunting more fun

If you ever get tired of looking for ammo and want to sell this one, I’ll give it a great home.

I highly recommend.

Seeing the biggest buck you've ever seen at 30 yards and knowing you've got enough rifle to kill an elephant is very satisfying

One of my friend's had a set of 257 Robert rifles he used when he took his grandsons hunting. He liked the two of them using the same gun and same ammo so there'd never be any confusion or guns or ammo. I worked up a youth load for them using the Sierra 90 gr HP. It was a sweet shooting load w/ no recoil. They killed about a dozen deer w/ it. If you're interested in the load, let me know. I bet it's really hard finding ammo for it these days.

If you don’t mind waiting, get an AR SBR in 300 BO and throw a can on it. Several suppressor models to choose from and the SBR with a can gives you that shorter package you are looking for. Get a good optic and if you are only shooting deer at 100 yds or less, you don’t need anything crazy. 3X9 Leupold, Vortex, Steiner, Trijicon, etc. will do just fine.

I’ve not hunted deer with subsonics out of my 300 BO but many recommended against subsonics for deer. I shot a 110 grain VMax and it has performed great on whitetail.
