I am currently in the process of purchasing a travel trailer from a private seller here in Louisiana and would appreciate any advice on the best way to handle the transaction.

I have already viewed the RV and we have agreed on a purchase price of ~$17,000, which I am prepared to pay outright (I am not financing through a bank). However, the seller is currently "upside down" on their loan, owing approximately ~$26,000 to their bank. The seller would like to use my funds to go towards the payoff to clear the title and release the lien. Also according to the seller the lienholder/bank is an out of state bank that is the dealerships preferred lender

To ensure a clean release of the title in my name without delays, I have a few specific questions:

- What is the most secure way to facilitate this three-party transaction (myself, the seller, and the lienholder)?
- who would i make the check out to?
- Should the transaction take place at the seller's specific banking institution to ensure the payoff is processed immediately?
- What specific documentation is required in Louisiana to ensure the title is properly released and transferred after the lien is cleared?
- Are there specific notarization requirements for the bill of sale or title application that I should prepare in advance?

I am ready to be flexible with the process to make sure this is done correctly the first time regarding taxes, registration, and title transfer. I have vetted the sellers and they appear to be honest people but are just bit unsure on the process as well.

Any advice is much appreciated.

(yes, i am fully aware that owning an rv is a potential money pit)

Do the deal at his bank/CU and make sure the note goes away as well as doing the title transfer and BOS etc. We bought a 2012 Raptor TH last September from a couple that was in better shape than most 3-5 year old units we had seen on the lots. Oil field workers around her run roughshod over them.

Go to your bank an have them issue a draft, the only way your seller will be able to collect is if the clean title makes it back to your bank and then you will be charged the money.

A draft has nothing to do with financing.

How is 17k releasing a lien on owed 26k?

seller has to bring 9k to closing to ensure payoff.

or

you need notice that bank is accepting a short payoff and waiving the lien.

or

bank and borrower have an alternative plan to pay the short balance and then thus are able to release lien on rv.

I'd make a phone call to the finance co. and get full instructions for how to collect and send payments to them. What needs to be on bill of sale etc, notarised etc. all payments would be payable to bank imo.

You’re getting a great deal. Rv’s hold value at a certain point. New ones keep getting more expensive. Keep up w maintenance, wax, keep roof covered somehow

Go through sellers finance company. They will have the answers.

Would be interesting to see sellers total spend on the RV over 3-4 years they owned. Down payment, monthly pymts, maintenance and 9k payoff.

Or make sure you get a screaming deal if you do. Then again, you won't have a warranty. You don't get an RV to make money

It would make more sense for the seller to make the lump sum 9k payment to bring the payoff down to what you're paying for the rv. Less moving parts.

If they’re $9k in the whole surely they didn’t give a down payment.
