returned home to find a young water mocassin sitting by their front door on the patio. The snake was killed but what is the probability that there are more than one baby mocassin around in their yard? They live on a lake not a big one but located right in the middle of a subdivision and not in that heavily wooded area. They spent over $3500 dollars (anti venom, etc.)and are worried there maybe more around their house.

Didn't kill her but her leg was huge and she was at the vet for 2 days and it wasn't cheap. Now they are so paranoid about letting her go outside. I told them to keep her on a leash to let her go use the bathroom until they can determine if there are more.

She'll respond better the next time she gets bit. God forbid

Many vet practices have been acquired by private equity outfits. Got to generate revenue for their overlords.

Wait til you see hospital prices for anti-Venom, ER, and ICU charges. Makes buying a pair of quality snake boots a worthwhile investment.

Get a blue heeler as a companion dog for the lab. The heeler will find all the snakes around and whip them to death.

more feasible to just buy another dog each time.

You’ve had 10 dogs get bitten by poisonous snakes? Where the heck do you live?

I no longer own a dog because it’s cost prohibitive and duck hunting went to shite.

My Lab loves snakes. Has been bitten at least twice by western diamondbacks while hunting cotton tops in New Mexico. Has been bitten other times but not sure what kind of snakes. Always in the face. Took her to the vet the first time a diamondback got her, was told she would be fine. She was. It swelled bad every time and she was sore but still ready to hunt.
By the way she is a pointing lab. Hates cottontops and road runners more than snakes because they refuse to hold and only fly after running about 600 miles. She despises a road runner....thinks they are pheasants and has the same sort of relationship with them that Wiley Coyote has,,,,thankfully she does not have an ACME vendors account nor the wherewithal to obtain one....

Buy some Victor Snake A Way from Lowes. The stuff works. Lowes
I threw that stuff out after seeing a timber rattler on my property. The very next day I found another and 2 weeks later, another. Both timber rattlers. That stuff made them come in not go away!

I bought air ambulance insurance ($100/yr for a family of 4) for this reason. Our local hospital has 1 bottle of anti venom on hand.
