I snagged a branch w a topwater in a pond and my line broke. I wanted to fish that popper today and it was the only one I had.

An old pond crawler was flooded from rainwater on the bank, so me and my son flipped it to go retrieve the bait. I told him there would likely be a snake underneath, and we weren't disappointed.

It was a juvenile and coiled, and before I could call it, my son said king snake, and yes it appeared to be a speckled king snake. He asked to play w it, and I told him not to harm it. But as soon as he approached it, it coiled and struck like a venomous snake, then lifted its little tail and shook it like a rattle.

I told him keep it where it's at and grabbed my phone to record it, but the damn thing got away before I could get it.

My question is do any of yall have any experience w a king snake doing that? I've never seen or heard of one doing that, but I've only encountered adults in my lifetime.

Yes some of them are assholes.

Most of them you can pick up and are gentle

A mud snake is about the only decent size snake I've never seen aggressive ever.

Can't make them bite. My sample of one with hognose is the same.

First thing Wiki says under behavior for speckled king snake is that when threatened, it will shake its tail like a rattlesnake

King Snakes will do that with their tails. They can be very aggressive. If it was black with yellow speckles then yes it was just a speckled king snake

Identity snakes through physical characteristics, not behavior.

They're like people, except with less legs.

Just like people with no soul who are constantly looking for any opportunity to kill you.

All snakes can and most snakes will strike if threatened. And many non-venomous snakes will rattle their tails. It's common behavior.

Most people think that when a harmless snake rattles its tail, it's mimicking a rattlesnake. But, that's not exactly true. Snakes have been doing this for eons to intimidate predators. Rattlesnakes, just got really good at it by eventually evolving a rattle. So, now that predators know that rattlesnakes exist, tail rattling by other snakes might have the effect of mimicking a rattlesnake, but it began as an intimidation behavior that had nothing to do with rattlesnakes. And that's all I have to say about that.

Sounds like it was being more defensive than aggressive.

I'd like to add that MULTIPLE characteristics should be used. The old "diamond shaped head" characteristic for identifying a venomous snake can be misleading. Many snakes will flatten their heads and then they appear to be that shape.

Yeah, I've honestly found that king snakes can be the biggest assholes of all. Thankfully they aren't venomous, but the bites don't feel good. Also, infections.

I've gotten to where I avoid handling any snakes, poisonous or not, but if I find a rough green snake around the yard, I'm going to try to catch that little critter. They're pretty much a legless anole.

I used to belong to an identification group on FB. So many times, when a venomous snake was posted and ID'ed, the phrase "best if observed from a distance" was tacked on to the identification. In reality, it should be tacked on to all. In my opinion, snakes are really interesting animals but handling them is really useless.
