re: Question about Jeep Wranglers

I have a '07 FJ and a 2011 Jeep Wrangler Sahara. FJ has way more room and is more comfortable to drive. Mileage is about the same. I can carry my kayaks/bikes/etc on top of the FJ. The rack solutions for the Jeep are not very good and super expensive. Taking the top off the Jeep really is a great advantage.
If you get a Jeep, get the 4 door for the extra space. I got the 2door to end up at college w my daughter, but the lack of room for my hunting stuff is aggravating.

I do like the FJ but do not like the way the extra doors open. I wish Toyota would make a Wrangler style vehicle.

go get you a 80 series land cruiser with about 150K miles on it. Will last you another 150K. Excellent offroad capabilities, nice in the city and you can get them for under 8K.
I got mine at 103K miles 5 years ago and it has been in the shop twice. It now has 193K miles.

I have a 2013 4 door wrangler. I love it. The 285hp v6 has plenty of pep, and it's a very fun vehicle around town. I have a hard top, and that makes it a legitimate suv for doing things like running carpool and grocery errands. That said--it's not my only vehicle. I also have a f250. I've taken the Jeep as far as Destin, but normally if I'm driving anywhere on the highway I'm taking the truck as it's more comfortable. The Jeep really rides well, and is plenty smooth on the road, but the seats are a little suspect for long distance. That's my only complaint. I'd guess a higher trim level would have nicer seats--I'd spring for that. It's very nice to have a vehicle that's small enough to actually park. Compared to the land yacht that is my f250 is refreshing to run around town in.
Overall--would recommend

I have a 2013 wrangler 2 door - this is my third jeep. If you are considering a jeep make sure it has the pentastar engine (2012 and newer), they also worked out a lot of the 2012 engine troubles in 2013. I had a 2009 JKU with the chrysler crate and the difference is big. It will handle all your offroad needs and they are a lot of fun to drive offroad.
I have a base model with 6spd manual, manual windows and locks, and soft top. I do have a few creature comforts like satelite, cruise, and blue tooth. I bought the base model with a soft top, on my previous 2 I had both hard top and soft top, and sold both my hard tops so I wasn't even looking for a hard top this time. The base model comes with 16" steelies - I just upgraded to a set off a rubicon that someone was selling.
I had my previous jeeps lifted with big wheels and tires and all the gear, but found myself breaking more stuff offroad. This one will stay stock height, with some improvements to the suspension and I will probably put my winch bumper on at some point.
I have always been impressed with the offroad capability even bone stock, 4wd is used during hunting season a lot, I can get back to a lot of places a fullsize or even midsize truck can't. I can't do any 4 or 5 rated trails, some 3's are hard. We take trips to superflift and Barnwell ORV parks yearly to ride the trails. This is my daily driver so being 1,2, and most 3 rated trail capable is just fine for me.
Main thing to remember is it is a jeep, at some point even with a hard top you will find leaks, if you get a soft top you will have wind noise, as you lift and add stuff you gas mileage goes to crap unless you regear and do other things to offset the extra weight and size. I have not had any motor issues or clutch issues. I have a 2" receiver in the back, it will pull a trailer if you need it to,(If you are going to do a lot of trailer or boat pulling I would reccomend a 4dr). Since I can get it around my lease I don't trailer an ATV. I have a cargo carrier that I throw on the back to haul coolers, gear, and deer in and out. I have always had jeeps, so I can't really compare it to other vehicles. I enjoyed my 4 door, but as the kids got older I wanted a 2 door, sometimes I wish I had stuck with a 4dr other times I am glad it is only 2.
If you have any other questions let me know - I have done most of the modifications to my previous jeeps myself so I know a little about upgrading, but am by no means an expert.

gas mileage does suck. 13-15 for me.
If I go outside and look at the readout I bet it is under 13mpg right now with all of the in town driving

Gas mileage is one of the main reasons I sold my last jeep. It was a CJ with a built 350 in it though. I'm now driving a gas-sipping FX4 at around 14mpg, which is about 5mpg's better than my jeep.

seen you post about jeeps a lot on here. Did you go to a Christian school in Monroe and drive a jeep?
Nope - I am a Canadian living in this great country....

I get 15-16 in town and 18-20 on the highway - I also found my electronic gas mileage reading to be off most of the time. I could always regear to get better mileage with a stock set up and 33" tires. Bone stock jeeps usually come with a 3.21 rear end, where as a 4 door is 3.73, and rubicon 4.11 - if you buy a stock jeep and increase the tire size if your worried about gas mileage you could always regear to 4.11 - a Rubicon will get better mileage than a bone stock sport.

Yeah, find a Tacoma 4x4 with the least amount of frills on it. You can thank me later.

If anyone would bother to do the slightest bit of research, or, you know, just look at the post I made earlier...they'd know that Cherokee =\= Grand Cherokee. They are two different vehicles.

I'd look for a 2004-2006 TJ instead of buying a newer JK. Unless you want 4-doors, but it sounds like you do not. I personally hate the 4 door JKU but to each his own. I found mine on Craigslist. It was someone's 3rd vehicle and he didn't drive it much. Told me he was going to get a pair of ATV's for him and his son to ride instead of keeping the Jeep, since his son was like 12 or 13 and couldn't drive yet. Has a hardtop and a softtop. The hardtop is great in the winter. Much less road noise, and helps when the heater is running. I take mine off about Feb or Mar each year and put it back on in Oct/Nov.
Mine is still basically stock. I've replaced the bumpers and side steps with a matching set. The ones that were on there broke, so while I was putting new steps on I sold off the old bumpers and just replaced them all. I'm eventually going to put a 2-3" lift on it and put some 33's to replace the 31's that are on there now, but I just bought them about 8 months ago, so that is probably a year or two down the line.
MPGs suck, but like I saw on a Jeep forum, someone described it as driving a brick with a tent for a roof, so what do you expect?
Also I saw someone here suggested getting an XJ (Cherokee) and that is an excellent idea. My wife got pregnant a few months after we got the Jeep, and dealing with car seats can be a hassle. In the summer I just rolled up the back window and sat him in the infant seat through the back. In the winter it is a little easier since I just pop up the window on the hardtop. But when my daughter is with us, she can strap him into it for me from her booster seat. I seriously thought about buying an older Cherokee just to have 4 doors and a 3rd vehicle. Something to just beat around in and not worry about messing anything up when I need some lumber or pine straw from Lowes.

A FJ80 is the correct answer.
Plenty of room
very reliable
rides very comfortably
dual lockers
4.5L V8
leather and shite
cheap to mod
you can get them in mint condition relatively cheaply
don't have to be like every other guy with a Jeep
FJ Cruiser has horrible blind spots, and I mean horrible
If you were to get a Tacoma with a cap on the back, dont get a new one. Get a 99-04 V6 4x4 SR5 TRD. Throw some toolboxes in the back and you won't be sliding all over in the ice

I love my 2014 4dr Sahara hardtop. It is my daily driver and I find it very comfortable. Husband has a 2013 4dr Rubicon hardtop and we drove 10 hours each way on a roadtrip last summer and it was a comfortable ride imo.
I have the tow package on mine and will likely get a small trailer at some point to haul camping gear/kayaks in.
To clarify, yes I'm a chick but my Jeep isn't used as a typical soccer mom vehicle like other chick owners. I love that I can take the hardtop off if I wanted. That I can take the doors off the thing if I wanted. Could put a bikini top on it in warmer months if I wished.
Basically I just like the options a Wrangler gives you. You can customize it to suit you or you can keep it stock for a while and still have a decent vehicle with off roading capabilities. I won't be doing crazy Moab like rock crawler trails in mine but I like that I can easily drive now to campsites or trailheads and not worry about the road conditions. Had a maxima before this(we still have it actually) and there were times I had to park a mile away from trailheads cause no way my car could make it on the forest road. Not the case with the Sahara.
Like I said...I like the options a Wrangler gives me and I like that it isn't as boring as all the other soccer mom SUVs you see out there.
