I think the FJ 80 would be a solid choice. Just want to look for one that has had the head gasket done and the front end rebuilt. Buddy of mine bought one a few months ago and has had to sink some money into it doing repairs that a 150k vehicle just needs done. Plus, they can clear 35s stock if you're not doing any serious off-roading or with a 2" OME lift you'll have plenty of room and won't have to trim
Great vehicle though, I have a LR Discovery and we always try and one up each other on the trails

You could probably find one with the head gasket replaced. There are gobs of them with over 250k on the clock. Try that with a vehicle from the last decade
If you fix them up correctly with quality parts, they will last for over 500k

I have DD the following
1994 YJ- 95K miles - from Stock to 35's and SOA lift
2004 Dodge Ram 1500 -120K miles - All Stock
2013 Jeep JKU - 13K miles - All Stock
I still have them all. The YJ has been Off-Road only for years.
I love the Dodge, but driving the JKU is just too much fun. I average 17-18 MPG. There is a bit more road/wind noise but you cant beat going topless.
With traction control the JKU is a monster off-road and keeps up with just about anything with lockers.

'13 Wrangler Unlimited. (the wife's daily driver actually)
33" BFG-MT
2" lift
Rear locker
Just took a trip to Disney in it... 12 hours, 2 kids and all our shite. Not a problem.

yota is king of the (off)-road. Best trucks out there IMHO
It's an awesome truck, I have one. But tap the brakes on that king of off-road stuff. It doesn't have the approach & departure angles or a solid front axle, which can limit where it will go.

SFA doesn't help one bit in the mud

benefits of solid axle pretty much comes down to durability. IFS offers many situational benefits like higher dif/ground clearance.

While I enjoy the Wrangler, I wouldn't have it without a truck too. If you do get one remember you can always use one of those receiver storage racks for added space.

The two I've owned. Neither were new-fangled "Wranglers".

Just ordered a 2014 4 Dr with a manual transmission, hard too, and 3.73 gear ratio. Pretty excited for it to come in soon
