If I had to pick one I'd go with the 6.4. The mileage will indeed be worse but a DPF delete and mild tune(like the Spartan 210 tune) will up mileage considerably and the engine/tranny can easily handle the power as long as you don't beat the crap out of it. For mileage considerations my dad's 6.0's(06 and 07) got about 16highway/14city/12-14 towing. His 6.4 does about 15/12/10-12. Although pulling bigger crap(40ft 5th wheel or our enclosed trailer) it'll get as low as 8 or 9mpg. This is running 78-80mph so slowing down would help too

I ditched my DPF and EGR at 8,000 miles and have been getting 20mpg ever since. Thats on 35's and 20's. I have to go back to the dealership and have had no warranty problems. If the after market part did not cause a problem, they cant void your waranty.

i should add that this is an 08 cummins 6.7

FWIW, The problems were "fixed" with the 2006 6.0l matter or fact there were less recalls with the 6.0l diesel then any other engine ford has made. they stopped putting them in trucks because of regulations, but their commercial vehicles kept the 6.0l even when the 6.4 came out. I have heard that the 6.4 was garbage and that is why it only lasted 2 years...that is just what i gathered from my research when i was looking for my truck. That being said i have still heard of issues in the 06's but not in 07's which makes me believe the problem was fixed in 06 not for 06...look at the door and see when your truck was actually made, not the model year. hope that helps.

The 6.4's weren't really garbage, minus the mileage issue. The 6.4 was basically a temporary fix from Navistar because Ford was having so many warrantee issues/complaints with the 6.0. The 6.4 was basically used as a patch while Ford developped the new 6.7 in house and have since cut ties with Navistar. The 6.4 only lasting 2 years was strictly due to Ford ending their ties with Navistar.

oddly enough i was calculating my mileage (not using the computer, b/c it is wrong) and I get 13ish city and 20 interstate, but i pulled a trailer (roughly 8000lbs) on the interstate and got 18.5, the thing barely even notices it is back there. but it would be nice to bump all that a little. a guy i knew in high school had a 03 6.ol with a 6" lift and 36" tires ( i don't know how it was tuned, wish i did) he got 18 city and 24-26 highway if he stayed out of it.

obviously i never watched him calculate it but that is what was told. he and another buddy of mine went to houston for the weekend on one tank with over a quarter left when he got back, that is 500-550 miles with a quarter tank left in a ~36 gallon tank. which is roughly 22mpg

Some of the F250s with higher geared rear end are seeing mileage in the low 20's or so. I believe total cost would be about $1500ish. I guess you have to figure if the benefits outweigh the cost. With diesel reaching almost $4.00/gallon and expected to climb higher that extra mileage would be nice.
