Question about building a great fishing pond

I have a piece of property that I’m thinking about building a pond on. It would be approximately 8-9 acres. I know how to build the pond, but I’m not sure if the topography would lend itself to being a great fishing lake. Great meaning you can go catch plentiful nice bass and bream if managed correctly. I would be connecting two very steep ridges to impound the water. Steep as in you can’t walk up them. I don’t want to waste money if the banks would be too steep for to provide spawning areas. I’m not familiar with thermocline, oxygen levels, etc. I guess I’m asking if there is a company or consultant out there that could come look at the property and give input. Thanks in advance.

It sounds really awesome just like it is. Those steep drops are excellent natural holding places. They will spawn where they can and be fine. I'm jealous

LSU Agriculture Center will probably provide some information if you asked them.

I just built an 11 acre pond in Madison County. We had Mississippi State lay it out (with our engineer) and we got very detailed, ie ditches, elevation changes, depth (18’-20 max), dirt mounds, pea gravel, feed stations, etc. There was nothing we didn’t lay out.
We also brought in 35 concrete culverts for structure, along with brush piles, concrete piles, and huge tree structures.
Our goal is to grow big fish. We will stock it in the spring.
Be careful and prepared on what you’re biting off. We moved 35,000 yards of dirt and are in 75K already without it being stocked. Just FYI.
Happy to answer any questions you have.

It's preferable to have a natural water source such as a creek/river that runs constantly to provide oxygen, fresh water, food (minnows, crawfish etc etc).
We built one on our land years ago, we dug out a 30' trench with different levels/flats and built a dam then let the creek fill it up.
Some guy came and stocked it with what they called "government" bream, these things are giant bluegill. Also Bass, crappie and some flat head catfish to control small fish, It's pretty good when I get to go.

Just cut a flat bench or two on the slopes.

Gotta be careful about that kind of stuff as far as legal/permit issues go. The Corps of Engineers can be a real bitch about that stuff, depending on the district.

People fill ponds with natural waterways all the time. The only gotcha in Louisiana is if it flows you have to have a fishing license to fish it even if it is 100% on private land.
OP if you want to read a TON, go to forum.pondboss.com

Yea that is the way to go.
If you are the freaking TVA. Your going to damn up a river? You damn up a creek or even a blue line stream you are going to be asking for trouble.

Only question I have is can I get some coordinates (for pond and structure).

Yup. And trash fish and you're gonna spend a shite ton on a spillway. Better not flood your neighbors.
And even if you do some work yourself, get someone that knows about and has built ponds. It ain't as simple as it looks. Building a 8 acre impoundment for a neighboring hunting club. They decided they needed it after they saw mine...then doubled it. They're going all out. Good guys to do work for. Damn weather has been a bitch this year though.

called "government" bream,
Redear. I stocked mine 75% bluegill and 25% redear. Along with bass 6 months later. Added about 250 channel cat but don't have any breeding structure. Will be 2 years in April since bass stocked. Already caught some 3 pounders and a 4. Hung a big sumbitch. Had a few mudcat so I think that big'un must've made his way with the mudcat from a nearby creek.

Helped a friends dad redo his pond last year after he lost the levee a year before. He designed the dock. Think I'm gonna go with the same look on mine.

Dang. Does he park his truck on that dock?

People also build houses all the time after clearing some woods--doesn't mean it was done with all of the proper permits in place.
All I'm saying is that if OP is going to dig an 8 or 9 acre pond (lake), I would be damn sure I have all of my ducks in a row before connecting it to a stream or bayou.
OP, you might also look into your local NRCS office. They might be able to provide some assistance with the questions you have.

There is for sure companies out there. My uncle did a few years ago and got in touch with a wildlife biologist through BASS.
His is a 3 acre pond and it’s slammed full of trophy fish.
As far as topography goes- he put in a couple of spawning flats in the middle and cut a creek system in it. He also put in a shite load of vertical structures.
He used to go to Toledo or Sam Rayburn every weekend. He just stays on his little lake now.
He’s got some brush in one corner too that holds a shite load of white perch. He also has like 4 holes that are about 10’ diameter and 20’ deep.
His thought process was a pond that could hold a frick load of baitfish and they would have somewhere to hide and spawn as well.
