I know that even a riding mower will move a sizeable boat on flat ground but I have about a 15 degree incline I would like to pull my 20 foot jon boat up and its sodded so driving on it more than occasionally is out of the question. Anyone have any idea if any atv's would pull say 3000 pounds up a sodded 15 degree incline without tearing the grass up? Thinking something along the lines of a Mule with some sort of turf tire.

Only one way to find out. Make sure you video it to share

What about installing a winch? Is this a place where you store it or launching it?

15 degree incline

That's pretty steep. 6% is the steepest allowed road grade, for reference the Lake Charles bridge is around 4%. I'd think you'd tear up grass in a hurry, a ATV doesn't have enough weight to keep the tires on the ground in my opinion.

what i know after being a lawnmower repairman is that is not true.

using any riding mower to move your boat may move it, but it will make your mowers transmission fail, its not a matter of if, but its only a matter of how long it lasts before it will fail, and then you will need to buy a new mower.

lawnmowers can pull small lightweight things like a garden trailer or spreaders, but they are limited to under 50 Lbs before you start doing permanent damage to the transmissions

Are you sure its 15 degrees? Thats REALLY steep. I use a golf cart to pull my 18 foot center console around through my yard. It pulls it fine.

Your atv isnt going to go up that without tearing the grass up, boat or not.

what about pulling it with your truck and putting the atv in the boat? I guess depending on whether there is a front deck. I've seen a guy cruise with a gator tail (wanna say 40 efi) and a rancher or rubicon or some mid sized honda atv. Then pop it off the boat on the bank and hit the swamp deer spots.

It gets tricky when you get on the interstate.

That seems questionable at best.

Have a tractor?

That's steep for an ATV regardless of it being grass.

Is this something you would do all the time? If so, installing a wench like someone else said to get it off the incline would be better.

You should be fine if it’s just a Jon boat. Especially if you’ve got a big bore ATV with a low gear and differential lock. The tongue weight on the rear tires should help.

If you have too much tongue weight the front end of the ATV will “ float”. Then you will have no steerage.

It is a delicate balance.

IF it it 15% but only 20 ft of hill... maybe if you get everything moving and hit the incline. If the incline is longer or long then almost zero chance.

Going to need some tire chains!!

since this is in your yard and therefore likely a short distance, I say, "send it!"

Guy not far from me has a Gheenoe with about a 25HP prop outboard, trolling motor, graphs and at least 2 batteries and a tank of gas on a rack in the bed of his truck...on an aluminum trailer. It is fully mechanized except he has to pull the ramps down....but the trailer tires sit on the tailgate of the truck. He uses it to fish swamps and small creeks where driving a truck is almost impossible, pulling a trailer out of the question. It looks like the Beverly Hillbillies going down the highway but he catches a lot of BIG bream in those out of the way places. If he is going to an accessible spot he trailers like normal but when headed into the muck he'll load trailer and all in the bed...

Not opposed to buying a small tractor...have though about it. It'd be nice to have around the place. Anyone have any experience with say a 20-25 HP 4 wd tractor with turf tires? I used to have a 25 hp Kubota Diesel Loader Backhoe and that thing would have drug my house up that hill...but it would have turn the sod up LOL. A small tractor can be had used in my area for about the same price as a late model used ATV.

That is my inclination LOL. I am pretty certain that at 20 MPH or so and not stopping even my huge assed truck would glide right up it with the boat behind it...the trouble would be finding room to stop and turn the truck around to get it out of the yard.

People that owned the house before us had a small travel trailer...slightly bigger than one of the tear drops folks have...and parked in the back yard by backing up with a Jeep Wrangler. It did some damage to the grass but not bad...but they only did it a couple of times a year. I would like to use my boar more often than that...

I have seen some youtube videos of people with lake houses up north who use a winch to pull their boats and trailers from the lake to a shed....I have given this some serious thought also but it seems like a lot of work every time I want to put the boat in the yard...

Mid 2000s I was in junior high and pulled a 15 foot welded boat with a 25 hp and a trolling motor with a Yamaha Grizzly 660

Oxbow lake down the road from where I lived and all private farm land around it so no public launch. Farmer let me launch off his turn road but no ramp, Bank was so steep I had to be careful not to let water pour over the transom when I launched. It was way steeper than 15 degrees. Trailer axle would get hung a lot of times but it always pulled it out. However not tearing up the grass isn’t gonna happen you’re gonna spin tires

I would suggest putting a winch on the ATV and driving a post into the ground about 3 feet with quickrete to anchor it. Winch yourself up instead of pulling with the tires
