Protein pellets/feed for deer.

Buddy of mine told me to use Buck Boosters. They don’t sell it at my local feed store and the closest place is a really good drive away.
Our local place sells Antler max.
Does anyone have any insight/info? Is Buck Booster that much better and worthy of the extra trip?

Probably not. The marginal difference in different protein feed isn’t going to make any difference.
Feeding protein isn’t going to do much anyway unless you are doing it year round on thousands of acres for 6+ years.
Chainsaw some trees and plant summer plot. You’ll get more benefits and save some money.

What are you looking to accomplish? There’s not much difference between them, I definitely wouldn’t drive or pay more for one brand over the other. Takes a lot of money and work to put out enough protein to actually see an improvement from it.

Not familiar with it but a quick google looks like it’s pretty similar to antler max . It shows they sell it in a 18&20% protein blend with close to similar mineral content.
Just keep in mind for a supplement feed program to work you need ~2lbs per deer per day it can get expensive real quick. Also it takes patience to see results it’s not a quick fix and a commitment because you’re not gonna see results for 2-3yrs (higher weights, better fawn recruitment, bigger antlers. We do it but I’m not completely convinced it’s needed but it makes everyone feel good.
We plant summer food plots and will swap from corn to pellets in three gravity feeders that have hog proof pens next month. We will run pellets until the spring green up or mid summer then swap back to corn mid September or so.
One thing I can say is that our average doe weight since I started keeping record 5yrs ago is 130# which is very good for pine/hardwood bottoms and cutover with no agricultural around.

The S TX deer biologist that’s been interviewed on the Deer University podcast several times said it best: if you’re buying it in bags, you’re probably not moving the needle on herd nutrition.

I put out antler max and corn. They let the antler max rot. They devour corn. Dunno. Maybe its a spring feed?

Well, dont put out the corn. When i started antler max i mixed 50/50 corn. Then slowly cut the corn until it was just antler max. They obv will eat corn if there first

I know its a patience kind of thing so definitely not looking to see results next season. Just heard from a friend that protein helps get the deer’s body mass back up quicker, then everything else after that can go to bigger mass on racks.
Have been debating a spring/summer plot though. The properties next to us seem to have better luck with deer and we are just trying out a few things.

I put out protein for 4 years straight. Retailers kept going up every year $.50/bag. I was buying 4 tons/month and it was tearing my head off. After this deer season I’m done. Did it help? Yes but you can do the same with food plots. I don’t know how someone with thousands of acres can afford to feed deer with protein. Year round food plots mixing in perennial clovers is a much cheaper option with the same benefits.

Buddy of mine helped manage a 4500 acre tract. The owners in the spring buy a pallet a week for six weeks. They plant 40 acre tract of soybeans just for the deer. They have huge bucks on this place. It pays off but it’s expensive.

Not trying to hijack your thread but have you considered cottonseed? High in protein, not going to fall apart in high humidity. Very simple wire “box” to hold it. Doesn’t tend to draw raccoons, etc.
You can put your wire box 2 1/2 feet off the ground out of reach of most hogs. You might want to at least consider or look into it.

We fed for two summers and planted until feeding was banned in Claiborne County last summer. While we didn't see a huge difference in deer weight in that time we saw a HUGE difference in deer population. We really had a lot of deer on our place while feeding. With the ban last summer we couldn't feed so we planted heavily, beans, a little corn, a little milo and a lot of vetch.
We held a lot of deer with the planting but the planting plus feeding at the same time is what have proven to give us the largest deer herd. Personally I think feeding is on it's way out unfortunately it's just a matter of time before CWD gets more prevalent and supplemental feeding will be stopped. Until it is we will continue to feed and plant in the summer.
I am also looking at ways to add Humic acid to feed and/or soil has anyone gone down that worm hole on their own yet?

Personally I want to see an end to the feeding. A dude with 2 acres and a pile of corn has just as much a shot at a huge buck as a dude with 1000 acres planted with year round food

I’ve been hunting swms my whole life and the hunting has taken a hit since corn was allowed

Can’t help but I’m really interested in what you’re able to do.
Are you west of 61?

I feed Record Rack. Deer seem to love it.
My buddy feeds Antler Max on his lease all Summer and has good luck with it.

Anyone have luck with throwing these from a spin feeder instead of a gravity feeder?

For protein to be effective it needs to be 1-2. Lbs per deer. That’s a lot of spin feeding to put out enough for just three deer. And if the deer don’t show that day the pellets break down from just the dew.
At 12-18$ a bag you want minimum waste, gravity is the only way to go for protein.
