I've had a metal flat for two years and went to a true flats fiberglass (poling platform, low sides, shallow draft, etc...)
I went metal to begin with for the exact reason you stated, wanted to beat it up, but to be honest I never truely "beat it up".

I've never looked back, will likely have a true flats the rest of my fishing days, love sight fishing too much. Quieter when stalking fish, more comfortable in 1 to 2 foot chop, cooler in the summer, on and on...

I did a lot of research and picked up a used one in Florida, there or Texas is your best bet.

Banshee Extreme is one of the wettest, roughest riding, slowest of them all... but you sure can get it in some crazy stuff that's typically reserved for air boats and go devil's

If it's for fishing get the Gatortail. Instant reverse is really nice. I just have the tiller with the reverse plate and I have yet to be stuck.

If I were to go back to an outboard though, it would be with a flats boat!!

I have a gatortail 1854 with a 35 GTR. Have a nice troll motor on the front with extended deck. It's a shallow water fishing machine. Two to three people can fish comfortably. Also, have been stuck in some mud last season in delacroix when the tide was low. Have to say, reverse worked just fine. The shite I was in took an hour to get out of but don't think "full reverse" would've helped.

i have a 36 pro drive 1854. the reverse isnt something i use when fishing because its sort of a hassle but the full power reverse is a hell of a lot nicer during duck season and riding around in the real shallow stuff.

hell i got on plane in reverse playing around in a couple inches of water last weekend.

BS on the Majek. I can run a mile over a flat that deep if i hit it running. I'd go with a surface drive, way more versatile than a flats boat.

If anything is underpowered its the prodrive. Been in both, and the gatortail has way more top end. Full power reverse is great, but i have yet to ever get stuck with my 35 atortail and eneded up in a no water situation last duck season. My reveres works better in shallow water digging up mud than in deep water anyhow

Also, i heard gatortAil was completely revamping the reverse for future models.

Does anyone have a good list of boat options they have for gator tail. I know they have some on their website, but it doesn't look like a full list. I actually stopped at a dealer and he told me he didn't even have all of the options on him at the time.

Will they pretty much do anything for you? I want a big back deck for fishing along with the front deck, I'd like more of a leaning post than a seat, etc. I know I could always go for a custom built boat, but I was wondering if gator tail worked that way.

Pretty sure they will. One of them has a redfish series that is tricked out and probably what you are looking for. However, you're going to drop some coin on that.

Gator tail will build whatever you want. Just go over there and talk to Bubba

Well you can get speed out of the surface drives.
We have been in this debate for days on another site. The answer is they all have give and take. I drive a GDSD and in action it performs fast and smooth like an outboard but does not have neutral so you have to get used to it. The motor is balanced so it works well on your hand and transom. The gator tail instant reverse is top notch. The prodrive FPR is
nice but it has to turn the entire foot of the motor. More working parts = more problems. I have been strongly considering selling my go devil surface drive for a pro drive or gator tail but then I drive and like my GDSD. I am completely lost on what I want on my boat. Lol

My uncle and cousin both have gator tails and run them only in the marsh. No complaints and they swear by them but if you want something faster in the marsh go with the pro drive. Its gear driven unlike the gator tail. If it were me i would just get a outboard center console gator trax.

Its gear driven so your RPM's are faster than a belt driven surface drive (gator tail, From my understanding.) In open marsh the pro drive out performs the gator tail in speed. In the swamp the gator tail has the advantage over the prodrive b/c the belt has some give to it when knocking into cypress knees.

This is my understanding from my buddy, uncle, cousin (all gator tail owners) They own gator tail b/c maintance and parts are cheaper. Please correct me if i'm wrong but they all say the same.

They all last a long time if you take care of it regardless of conditions you drive in. They all have something unique about them and something aggravating. Makes it hard to point out a clear favorite. Just depends on what you want out of them.

Ended up going with a Ranger Banshee. Talked to someone with Gator Tail and by the time I put everything I wanted in the boat, it would have been pretty pricey. I got a good deal on this 2012 boat with the motor still under warranty, so I pulled the trigger on it. Only complaint I have so far is that I find myself not wanting to go in certain places because I'm afraid to get on top of an oyster bed . This thing is too pretty for some of the places I go.
