Going on a 20' nautic star. What would be best? Pros/cons of each?

I've never fished with the talon but have never had issues with my PP and question why anyone would not get one if they could.

Power pole.
I've never owned a talon but I've heard several stories of them getting stuck in the down position while fishing

I have PP's but really like the three stage Talons due to compactness.

My buddy just sold his Power Poles and went to an Minn Kota Ultrex with i-Pilot instead.
Swears by it.
I'm thinking of doing the same.

Your buddy should have kept at least one pole and still got the minn kota
I have a PP and xi5. They work great together. I still want another PP at times

I have Talons. Went with them so I could get boat in boat garage with 7' door. I've been very pleased so far.
Pros for PP: hold better imo because they deploy out and down. Heard great things about their customer service
Pros for Talon: fold down with tilt bracket to get under things or storage. Easy install and has a drive off alarm

Power pole has a tilt bracket through hydrilla gear. You can pole down when going u see garage as long as you can remember haha.
Co worker loves his talon and never had an issue. So OP go with whatever one you like. Can't go wrong

He had some issues with his PPs. For some reason, his pumps seemed to be extremely loud and he had issues with them sticking in the down position.
I don't have a lot of PP experience, but I know he sought out PP customer service and they said that was normal.
So far, he says he doesn't miss 'em with the Ultrex.

I have a talon on my 18' xpress and I like it. However when I move up to a bigger boat I will probably go with a power pole. I have had problems with the talon holding in a rough chop.

Power Pole without a doubt, superior product and their customer service is as good as it gets.

I purchased a 22' Nautic Star in 2011 and opted for the Talon because it could be raised manually using a socket and ratchet if it stuck in the down position or you lost power. This is correct, but mine stuck in the down position and it was because the cable jumped off of the sheave. I had to take the unit off of my boat and bring it to the shop fully extended. The failure was under warranty but was a PITA. If I purchase another shallow water anchor it will be a Power Pole for the simple reason the Talon is always sticking up and makes it difficult for anyone fishing in the back of the boat to fish. I would also recommend buying the longest unit available. The advice on the I-Pilot is good, but when you are in choppy or windy conditions the thing is constantly coming on and it makes noise every time it does this which can spook the fish. I will say that the I-Pilot is good in deep water like East Timbalier.

I've used both and owned 5 Power Poles over my lifetime. Power Pole without a doubt. Talons have a lot of issues, and if you have an issue, you generally have to bring it to a MK service tech to get it taken care of. This can take time. If it says anything, I know a MK service tech with two Power Poles on his boat .
I've had two issues with Power Poles over the years. I had a motherboard go bad on a Micro, and they sent me another no questions asked. I also have a control cap go bad on a 6' signature series, and they overnighted me another without problem. Good people over there. Very easy to deal with and I wouldn't take my business elsewhere.

can't really go wrong with either. I'd go power pole because of the customer service..
I understand the ultrex craze, but i would never give up my pole for one. You can't spot lock in 2-3 feet of water and not destroy the area.
2 poles and an ultrex is the deal. 1 day.

Their customer service is top notch. I had the board go out. They talked me through over the phone on how to test it and then take it apart. also helped me reinstall it and reprogram.

the one negative is the hydraulic lines. It can get messy.

My buddy does this. He has one pole and Ultrex. He deploys his pole and then spot locks. Works great. He has no plans on buying a second pole.
