Do yall coonasses really go out hunting with the intention of killing these things?

And if so, do you eat them?

Just seems strange to me..

No but they are pretty dumb and they make a good gumbo, like a hen so when the opportunty is there to take a few without much effort... feathers fly.

Yes. If you like to shoot and are willing to risk your life, you need to come to Lake Boueff on Opening day. There are probably over 1000 people in that lake all shooting their limit. They are very good to eat at the camp or smoked and in a gumbo. I don't care for them after freezing.

Flying gizzards IMO. And yes we would go after them with the 25/person limit in mind. Bring about 3 boxes of shells each and drop people off in the blinds then get someone to run them up Pouldoo and oyster gumbo is some fine eating.

15 man limit. We usually start shooting and by the time the sun comes up, you have over 100 birds dead on the water. I have missed one opening day in 25 years. I still can't believe I haven't been hurt. Safety glasses is a must.

Apparently I am not cooking these things right, cause we breasted some out and marinated them for over a day. We then deep fried them and it was like eating fried mud. Haven't shot another one since.

Poule D'eau from different areas taste different. I haven't tried any from Lake Catouatche, but I know Lake Theriot and Lake Boueff have two different flavors. My old man's crawfish pond tastes different also.

Yea, maybe we need to go to busting caps on coots up here. Them sumbitches are everywhere. Maybe I can hire a coonass to come up here and making a killer coot gumbo and that will inspire some rednecks to start firing down on coots.

I think it actually has a lot to do with what they eat

thats why we dont shoot many diving ducks... ducks that eat fish taste like arse (spoonies, merganzers, etc..)

Balls, we herd em up in the boat and drive em to the blind.. we shoot em, pick em up, bring em back in the blind... When things get slow, we holler PULL, and we throw em out of the blind, and shoot em again...

We used to have a competition to see who would pick up the decoys. You would have to paddle out away from the blind and you had 5 minutes to get your limit. It didn't take me long to figure out that if you tap the paddle on the side of the boat they get nervous and bunch up real tight. I always won

If you cook spoonies right that are shot in rice fields in North La or Arkansas there is almost no way to tell the difference than another puddler. Merganzers are not good to eat, but a spoony (which is a puddler not a diver) can be just fine when taken in rice fields.

I enjoy eating them but don't target them specifically. If they swim too close or fly too close (rarely does that happen) they die.

Seems like all we used to get in Point Aux Chenes was Poule d'eau, and when that is all you get you find ways to make them taste good. I will say that I'd shoot em' for the gizzards and hearts alone.
