Does Porter Cable make a good product?

Was at Costco perusing the aisles searching for samples and saw a porter cable combo kit with a drill, impact driver, reciprocating saw, and oscillating tool for $199. I think it’s the same set that Lowe’s is selling in this link.

LOwes

Is that a decent deal, or should I spend a little more for better stuff?

The reviews seem good. The industrial strength Porter Cable tools are legit.

Hell, I think I'll get one, too......

They use to make very good tools. They were bought by Black and Decker and not sure since then however.

Porter-Cable is under the Stanley Black & Decker, basically lower-end DeWalt-like tools now. Good for the DIYer around the house, like Ryobi and better the Black & Decker branded stuff. Personally I'd pick up Hitachi tools, especially the factory reconditioned tools.

Reconditioned 4-pc 18V combo kit for $148.

Yes. I have the impact driver, drill, hammer drill, jigsaw and reciprocating saw of their 20v max cordless and couldn't be happier. Biggest piece of advice is to buy the 4ah battery for cutting tools. For drill/driver the 1.5ah or 2ah will get you plenty of time, but cutting tools use more juice so the 4ah battery is really nice to have.

Ive had that set for about a year now. Nothing has let me down yet.

I lost the battery charger about a year ago, batteries are still going, but I dont use that very often.

If they suck, you can bring them back to Costco because they have the best return policy ever.

I can only vouch for the stuff I have by them, which is a pretty good bit of power tools and they are all at least 10 years old. Very good tools is my opinion, but that is based on how they were made and have held up over the last 10 years.

I've had a cordless drill that I had no issues with.

Also a small pancake compressor that last 3 or 4 years then the belt burned up and I couldn't find a replacement for it.

I've been using a PC hammer drill and impact and they're still going strong. The impact was even accidentally run over by my wife and it didn't skip a beat.

I started using Porter Cable after my detailing buddy showed me his 8 year PC old dual action polisher. It never failed him and saw heavy use for paint correction.

Porter-Cable used to strictly industrial tools then into high-grade consumer/pro-sumer tools. When they got acquired by another brand conglomerate and wrapped up with Delta the quality plummeted. B&D cleaned things up a little but PC is only a mid-tier power tool brand these days to compete with Ryobi, Kobalt, HF Hercules, etc. The chucks are usually the weak link in these tools though, get whatever for the best deal you can then order a good chuck right away to swap out.

I have the drill/driver combo. 20V lithium brushless and they’re beasts. I swore by corded drills for years but after using these a good bit for the past couple of years, I’m a convert. Holds a charge forever and recharged quickly. I’ve used them for all sorts of projects and plan on redoing my deck in the next year. That will be a real test, driving 3.5 inch screws by the hundreds all day. They’re obviously not your pro brand these days but the price reflects that. For the set I think I paid around $120, on sale at Lowe’s, and if I get 5+ years out of them that’s not too hard to replace.

Bought the 18 volt combo years ago at Lowes. My buddy got the 19 volt craftsmen at sears just after I bought mine. Wished I would of waited and did so also. But the PC combo worked fine for what I was trying to accomplish, Until my batteries died. Couldn't find any replacement batteries for under 40 bucks, then lowes got some in for 29.00 per and I bought two and am back in business. When these die I guess I'll have to upgrade.
