Looking to buy a pole saw. will be using to trim an Oak Tree. There are a few big branches I'd like to remove, because they are getting in the way of the lawnmower.

Really interested in what the board's thoughts are on an electric pole saw. Kinda want something on the lighter side. I had shoulder surgery and also my mother-in-law is likely to use the pole saw also.

Any recommendations on pole saws electric or gas?

I’d get something that matches the tool set you have if possible. I’ve used the dewalt pole saw and it’s great for light work and I own the chainsaw.

Electric if you can. So much lighter. I have done a ton of work with a ryobi. Works fine.

I have a harbor freight electric pole saw and a gas pole saw. If I have electricity available I will grab the HF electric every time. It's lighter and cuts as good as the gas saw. My HF pole saw is about 7 years old and I have abused it. I do keep the chain shape and check the bar oil often.

I bought a cheap 20 volt battery powered Black and Decker pole saw a few months ago. It does the job I need it to. The chain has dulled somewhat following Laura storm cleanup but I found another one at Tractor Supply Co.
Word of caution: be prepared to spend more time than you allowed to clean up! What you cut in 20 minutes may take you two hours to pick up and clean up.

I bought the HF electric pole saw and a 2000 inverter generator for less than the decent gas ones. Load it up in the side by side or truck and it does a great job.

i guess i should have been more specific for electric. Do y'all recommend battery or plug-ins/extension cords.

I recommend a ladder and chain saw if the branch isn’t too high. Pole saw wore me out. Just seems to take forever.

Will you have AC power available where you need it?

If you go battery (for portability), you should probably go with something you already have batteries for. If you don't already have battery tool, your choice is wide open.

I prefer electric for something I may use once or twice a year. My electric hedge clippers have been working fine for 30 years. I don't know if my electric HF Pole saw will last that long but I have got my moneys worth out of it.

Most the electric ones come out of China just rebranded by the name it is under.

One a pole saw you do want a light one to a certain extended.

You do want some weight as you want it to help push down not he branch.

Yup you usually need to pick up an extra chain, small bottle of bar& chain oil, and bar if they are cheap cheap cheap.

My bad, I missed the part of your MIL using it. I forget what brand it was but I used an electric to trim my mothers tree and it was a PITA. It did the job but wasn’t easy. So eventually I just climbed up on her roof and chain sawed the branches hanging close to the house.
