We’ve done several inshore charter trips the last few years and my son is wanting to do a tuna trip.
I’m assuming Venice is the best place on the gulf coast to charter out of.
What time of the year is better for what species?
I’m not one to want a long arse boat ride of more than two hours if that’s possible.

Who are the best charter companies for this?

Jamie Gaspard with pure adrenaline charters out of Fourchon. You will not be disappointed. He gives it 110% every time.

What does something like this cost roughly?

A lot after you factor in trip costs, fuel costs, potential lodge, tip for deckhands, etc. North of 3-4k.

Just for the charter itself I see prices from $1800 plus fuel to over $4,000-5k for overnight.

Just a lot of variables which I’m trying to learn about

Pre Bidenomics a trip with Mexican Gulf Charters would be $1800 plus fuel or $2400 flat rate, plus tipping, so about $3k

so about $3k

I'd want to be guaranteed a 200lb bluefin for that

I work on a facility that people Tuna fish near all the time.

It's a 1-hour helicopter flight. Gonna be way more than two hours if this is the area they are coming to.

Yea but at the price per lb of meat it's not a bad tradeoff.

You could literally buy 5 metric tons of whole yellowfin for $3k though. I know it's not the same as catching.

You’ll want to book the catching charter then.

Then Venice isn't where you need to be, look towards the Northeastern Coast. Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, and Maine is where you need for Bluefin on a consistent basis.

I've read that but it's usually stated that anything above X number of pounds stays with the boat

Is there any offshore fishing that would be better out of Destin or maybe Galveston than south La?

You won’t find any better offshore fishing than Venice or Grand Isle/Fourchon IMO. Especially for Tuna/Swordfish.

Most the guides down there are good at what they do and can put you on them. Bigger tuna fish come around later in the year for shrimp boats or Jan-March for lump season. You can tell them what you’re looking to do and they can probably tell you best time to schedule. Summer time you can catch a bunch of smaller/medium sized ones most of the time. Just have to find them.

Not sure what the prices are now because I’ve never had to pay for charter, but last I heard I think something like $2800 for day trip and you pay whatever fuel you burn on top. So figure somewhere around $4k not including lodging. Marina Cabins/Cypress hotel aren’t that expensive. Like $150/night. If you rent houseboat will probably be more expensive.

Some good Venice charters are:
Intensity
Relentless
Paradise
Voodoo
Mexican gulf
Fish Venice
Go Long

For the most part you can’t really go wrong in Venice.

I think you’re pretty spot on with that pricing, and that’s a good list of charters. If OP prefers Grand Isle/Fourchon, then Down the Bayou, Cajun Made and Fish Commander are the guys I’d book with.

Reef species like grouper can be great out of the panhandle.

I had a friend leave out of Destin on a (big) private sportsfisherman this summer and they ended up riding to the floaters South of Venice to fish (tuna)
