I'm originally from Venice and we were taught to say pee-row. People from New Orleans usually say pee-rawg from my experiences.

quote:

pe-rogue
quote:

Regardless, the g is not silent. Rogue

this is correct

on edit:
to be fair though...i grew up with "rawg"

but in outside sales for nearly 30 years you adapt and to whom you are speaking with...so I've been known to say it all three ways... row, rawg rogue...

if you can't hang your arse over the side of it in open water and ease nature without flipping, you don't qualify to be in this conversation.

Swamp cajuns pronounce it the French dictionary way, consistent with the "gue" rule (no gue is ever silent), the way it's been pronounced where it originated (our cultural version), since it originated. Prairie cajuns and those north of where the pirogue orginated and where it historically had very little use if any, pronounce it without the G.

Authentic Frenchman pronouncing it

There's no end to authoritative sources pronouncing it the way we do in the swamp. Can't find it any other way actually.

Northerners, show me what you got, and don't tell me about how so and so who's never had one or had a use for one says it.

All in good fun guys!

You know it's almost duck season when this thread comes back out. I've said both, but row is most common. And I do own one...
