We have two beagles as pets. Never hunted with them and one is 12.5 years old and the young one is 5. In the past week we have three less squirrels in the yard. Couple days ago the young dog(Elle) caught and killed a young squirrel and yesterday she brought in a big male that she killed. The wife was hollering that there was a squirrel in the house and I thought she meant a live one but Elle made the kill and brought it in like it was one of her toys and dropped it near the wife's feet like she was proud of the kill. Lol....... The third squirrel escaped but I don't think we'll see it around as it looked like it wasn't doing well.

I don't know what has triggered this catch and kill squirrels thing all of a sudden. Now doves on the ground feeding may be next but they usually ignore the birds.

For domestic purposes, there are ways to curb this behavior.

Nahhhh...... Go ahead and get one. You just need to teach it obedience. And I don't mean by beating it when it barks. Beagles have sensitive noses and when they bark(at least in my experience)it's for a reason. We had a possum explosion nearby and I had to catch and relocate some of them.

Just get a bark collar. I have two and they only bark when there’s something or someone near our house.

When I was a kid we had hunting beagles I. A person. In a suburban backyard. When they howled we turned the hose on them (it was pre-rigged for this). They learned quick not to howl. Now a days there are shock collars for this.

The pet beagle we have now rarely howls. Only when very lonely, riding uncrated in a car or riding in a boat in chilly weather. She is rarely lonely because my college age stepdaughter is home most days.

The house beagle is 5 months old and I'm wondering if starting her on rabbits is a good idea.

My beagle is three and one of best dogs I’ve had. Doesn’t bark unless something in the yard. Every now and then will chase a rabbit. Listens well too! Great with kids!

First off, catching a squirrel is freaking impressive for an dog. 2ndly, what's the big deal? They will educate themselves real quick to stay away from your yard. Not sure what good a squirrel can do honestly?

I had a beagle that caught and ate, whole, a squirrel once. We only found out about it during a car ride where she puked it up half-digested, still whole. Nastiest shite I've ever dealt with. I was puking on the side of GA316. So nasty.

I had a pet beagle that would catch birds and eat them alive! Omg it used to trip me out but she was a beast when it came to hunting in the yard! Great dog and she rarely howled unless there was good cause.

My beagle caught a whole corndog. He jumped up when he had the opportunity and snatched it out of my 3 year olds hand. He swallowed it, stick and all, before I could get it from him. I figured there was no way that he didn't chew it before he swallowed it. Every afternoon, I would go out and check to see if he passed the stick, no luck. Then 3 weeks later, in a Sunday morning, it came out. Straight as an arrow, a shitkabob. I took pictures and showed the Veterinarian, he couldn't believe it. Used to love to hear that dog howl, he was singing to us.

We adopted ours when she was around 5. She's fat and lazy but a fantastic dog. I was stunned one night when i let her out and she chased down and killed a rat. Freakin viciously killed it.

If beagles weighed 100 pounds they would be at the top of the food chain, and smart enough they would have already been to Mars and back, and we'd be their monkey-pets.
