Yes sir. You can use real wood. It probably would burn pretty quickly if that’s all you used. But man, the flavor of real wood is no comparison to the pellet

so if you had $1500 or so to spend and were just looking for a smoker and not worried about the grill aspect, which would yall go with? I have a brand new built in grill for grilling and use cast iron searbq griddle for steaks and items i want a crust on. This would be strictly for smoking.
I would want wifi and temp control to be very reliable.
Pellet pro is out as I have a dual band wifi network at my new house and thier patriot wifi controller will not connect. I would like the ability to smoke jerky and salmon at 150* so not sure rec tec is the way to go.
Anyone had success smoking jerky and cold smoking salmon lox on a rectec?

I layer with charcoal in my MB 1050 as well. I find just the ash bin does not give enough. I have also ran a full split standing upright in the hopper surrounded by charcoal.
I haven’t touched my 2 primos in almost a year since getting it. I have actually considered getting rid of them to use that space for other cooking devices on my back porch.

So just to clarify you are putting the wood chunks in there or chips? I have a bunch of wood chunks so that would work out.

I have used both layered in the briquettes.

You can burn just about anything in the hopper of the gravity smokers. I would use wood chunks, chips would fall out IMO. You can run charcoal briquets or lump. I have run a split (your store-bought firewood-sized chunk). It's like a pellet grill for those types of fuels, easy to run and set temps.

I did chips this weekend. All burned.

Nice good to know! Mine is the original model with the wider gaps on the charcoal grate but they might work too I just never tried. I did try some of that Kingsford charcoal with the applewood flavor this past weekend on some bacon type stuff and got good results IMO.

I really like the idea behind the master built gravity feed setup. I love my camp chef, but as with all pellet grills I long for more smoke. I wish one of the American companies would build a higher end gravity feed. I'd be all-in. As of now I'm considering a "pellet assist" setup for my next rig.

OTOH, while I was somewhat hesitant to buy anything by Masterbuilt, it would be really hard for me to be more pleased with the one I have.

Agreed...for the the price it works well IMO and the discount doesn't hurt
I got a buddy one and he texted me that it should be illegal to be that easy. He was coming from a KJ style grill tho...a pellet would be that easy as well.

So yall are getting good smoke with the gravity fed? Able to do a while pork butt or brisket?

Appreciate the info, looks like my cheap arse is getting into the lazy smoking game.

My offset, that Biggerbear worked so hard rebuilding, just isn't going to be used much in the future.

Yep I am pleased with the smoke and results I get out of mine. Not as fuel efficient as my primos but good enough and easy to fill. I can hold as low as 150 degrees as well...smoked some cured sausage for hours.
I had fans and controllers for my Primos but it was still a task to set it all up and adjust the dampers to get it rolling. The MBGS and the pellets just make it so easy wit the controllers built in My buddy has the rec-tec 700 and he said he can light his pit from his phone....thats lazy
You in the laffy area?
