Any tips on what lights will look the best and last the longest?

I know dealing with Christmas lights is always a crapshoot no matter what you do.

Anybody have any experience buying comercial grade light wiring spools and splicing then to fit as needed?

Seems like this would make it easier to have the lights custom fit to the roof. Supposedly they last longer and if a bulb goes out it’s easy to replace. Downside is you have to buy the bulbs separately. Probably cost a little more, but might be worth it.

Here’s an example - LINK

I’m sure all the OB wives have all the OB husbands working hard every year to decorate the house around Christmas time.

Please impart some of your OB wisdom to a frustrated Christmas light novice!

Get a star shower and call it a day.

or end up like me rebuying lights to replace the nice ones that magically stop working between Jan and October just sitting in the attic.

Mfers worked when they came down. Baffles me.

I have whatever the Mrs bought at Walmart. Buy about 5 extra strings just for the bulbs. One string of lights is about as cheap as a 5 pack of bulbs.

Go to Walmart the day after Christmas and restock at huge discounts. I’ve gotten to where I don’t reuse much anymore.

The only lights we put up (other than trees) are the net lights on the bushes out front. The nets go up quick and easy. Suprisingly they have lasted several years being as they are about the cheapest light sets you could get.

I bought the 500' spool from christmaslightsetc, and several lights from them. I've been very happy with their quality. The spool of wire works perfect so you can customize your lengths.

how does the OB store their lights for the year. Just got mine out and they were still a mess even after putting them on spools last year, 1/3 of the clips fell off

Buy C9s and custom build it to your roof length. Do basic setup year one and then build on that. Custom lights are so much easier to put up every year after one time you will never go back

measure linear feet you need for your house and add some cushion.

Buy large spool of C9 strands and bulbs sold separately. can find in like 25 packs, I use the clear. buy enough clips. each socket needs a clip for either the shingle or gutter.

LED is overkill and overpriced in my opinion

Hang strand and cut ends to length. be aware of what end of cords need male or female plugs (can be made easily)

Add ya bulbs. Plug in

at the end of the season remove carefully and keep the clips and bulbs on the strand. Store in a rubbermaid bin or something and wrap each section separately and label them accordingly for which part of the house they install.

The next years the strands install much faster and you only need to replace the single bulbs that are out. Not complete stands or dumb arse sections in a icicle strand that goes out in the middle of the holidays.

This year they will be fine and most likely look great.

Next year you will have one or two strands that will have light out. Should be pretty easy to find.

year 3, unless you throw them all away and start over you will hate every bit of it. If you don't you'll likely spend 3-4 hours just trying to get all the separate strands working, maybe more.

Professional quality lights.

Recommended on this site a few years ago. I only order my lights from them. Quality lights unlike the crap sold in the big box stores.
