Anyone have ideas for replacing this fuel gauge on my old outboard fuel tank. It is unreadable. I don't know the brand, the lettering on the tank is too unreadable also, but it is a 6 gallon tank.

Its a 6 gallon tank, can you not see the liquid sloshing around in it? Kick/Lift test?

You can buy a brand new tank with gauge for about 50.

Yea, I can, just wasn't sure if there was a replacement cap that I could buy that wasn't so yellowed. Sometimes its just easier to glance back there and get an idea of the level

There's a handle on one end of those tanks that's meant to be used as a complex sightless level indicator. You grab it and apply vertical force, the tank will then pivot of the filleted vertex at the opposing end, causing the fuel in the non-baffled void space to "slosh" which provides direct reaction forces to the handle. Your arm acts as a PID logic unit, adjusting the applied vertical force based on the feedback it gets from the handle. Once balance is achieved, the precise level of fuel in the tank is calculated based off of the brains inherient knowledge of the void spaces shape and level of fuel in the void space.

Most complex form of "pick it up and feel" I've ever read

And how does that work if the tank is mounted in?

Then you look at the non-complex underdeck evaluator which is clearly identified by looking at how Bouyant the boat is in the water.

This is why I failed so many science classes. I'll never be able to figure out the 6 gallon bouyancy difference of a boat in water while I'm in it. Haha

I didn't, I just bought the boat 3 weeks ago. And if you don't believe that there are a ton of 6 gallon tanks mounted in Jon boats you have never duck hunted in Arkansas. Tons of people move them and batteries forward under seats, etc. for better balance

Remove the yellowed plastic with a dremel tool. Silicon a new piece of plexiglass to the top.

Make some sort of full/empty marks on the plexiglass if you want a high tech graphic display

Are those pretty universal? All the ones I could find were listed as specific manufacturers

This is hall of fame smart-assery right here.

On the OB.

Absolutely no idea. I'd just seen them used before so I posted up the image, and by seen used I mean not by me.

I may just grab one off Amazon. They are cheap and if it doesn't fit amazon is great on returns. Thanks

Mine too isn't readable anymore. I usually just open the cap and shine my cigarette lighter down there to determine how much fuel is left.

Be careful, drop that lighter in there, and its a bitch to get out and probly wont work again if you do.
