My buddy has a 25 hp yamaha outboard that doesn't work. He thinks it's because of the crankshaft. It's not an old motor. 2 questions: how much would it be to fix or how much coul he sell the motor as is?

What leads him to believe it's the crankshaft? And if it is, it's gonna be pretty expensive to fix. As far as value, I have no idea.

I'll be honest, I don't know shite about motors. He just told me what he thinks it is. He knew it would be expensive to fix it so I think he is weighing his options as to what to do.

Is it a 2 stroke or 4 stroke? This will play a factor in repair cost. I would probably have it fixed. Get an estimate to replace crankshaft and top end and then make an informed decision.

It really depends on what is wrong with the crankshaft. It could be as minor as the ring(s) or the key or as major as a broken shaft. Any idea how this happened?
Any mechanic worth his weight should be able to give you a "worst case" estimate of the costs of parts and labor.
ETA: could probably sell it as is, but wouldn't command a whole lot and it would probably be sold to a shop anyway

one way to make money would be to take it apart and sell the individual parts on ebay.
my neighbor gave me an old boat that was sitting in his yard. 1979 evinrude 115hp on a nice mckee craft 16 foot center console fiberglass hull.
I was able to get it cranked up the first day I tried. I still have a few little things to do but I was able to put it on the water last weekend and it ran pretty good.
so my point is there may not be much wrong with it. people neglect boats, it may be something simple like a gummed up carbeurator.
