I have a Matthews Triax, 60 Lbs draw. I have been shooting the Easton Axis, 5mm, 400 spine arrows. What are some similar setups that will match what I have. I plan to order through a pro shop and get them cut and everything then pick up.

A lot of variables but how much weight are you planning on running? What’s the gpi on the 400 vs the 350? I like the Axis arrow but if I were you I’d go with something other than the HIT insert. There are much better options. What’s your budget??

ETA: I have the Black Eagle stainless half outs with 60 grains of brass on an Axis 300 out of a 70 lb setup and I could probably bump to a 250 pretty easily with a little more weight up front. However, you may not want something that heavy. I’m at 586 TAW

Need to figure out what you want out of them. Some guys are speed freaks, others are kinetic energy freaks which means more weight.

I was one of those speed freak guys a few years back. Converted to heavier arrow and won't go back. My total arrow weight averages about 578gr

Been using the Hunters for years and they've been great. That said, I don't know enough about all the others out there to compare much.

Momentum kills. Not speed.

Exactly. Man I swear, since I've made the switch two seasons ago I've had a pass through on all 5 deer and 1 hog I've taken.

I had pass throughs with the lighter arrows, but most would break.

Awesome. What head are you using?

This is pertinent info to the OP too.

Why are you looking to switch?

I’m considering going to the 340s as I’m right there on the line with 28” draw set at 62lbs. Just want to see what difference it would make, if any.

If ever in doubt always go with the heavier spine if you’re on the fence.

In that 5mm size you could also go with a victory rip tko or a black eagle rampage. They both have a lower gpi so you could add a little more weight up front and have a heavier front of center if you’re into that.

Easton 5mm FMJ arrows. This heavier arrow will result in more pass throughs, it's about having kinetic energy and not so much the high speeds that carbon arrows provide. Using Easton 5mm FMJ arrows and 100 gr Slick Trick Std Broadhead, will allow you to take any big game animal. The Slick Trick is a 4 blade fixed blade broadhead that flies just like a fieldpoint. 4 German steel blades with surgical grade sharpness.

Shooting Easton FMJ 5mm 300spine with 50gr insert, 125gr G5 Strikers and lumenok....578gr total weight

Also, saw your post about your own bow shop. I feel the same way about some of the the things you feel like regarding the bow shops. I did find one Central that has over impressed me, Gotham Archery. I drive 2hrs for the assistance on what I cannot do. Over the past two years I've learned to build arrows, set my peep, d-loop, rest work, just the little things. If I need some sure enough work, Gotham is my go to.

Random thought, when you use a 4 blade broadhead, do you also do a 4 vane setup or is 3 ok? Not sure why it would matter but I like my vanes and blades to line up

FWIW, I've tried 3 and 4 vane setups on all kinds of broadheads. The only difference I saw were on longer shots. I won't shoot over 30yds, so I just stuck with 3 vanes. With the 4 vanes and shooting out to 60+ yds I felt like they grouped better. My guess is more vanes, more spin, tighter spin.

How do you like the FMJ’s? The last bunch I had weren't nearly as durable as I thought they’d be and seemed inconsistent. Mine were the 6mm though.

I've been using 320 spine 6mm FMJ's with 125gr 1.75" Grim Reapers for two seasons now and love them. The 3 deer and 2.25 pigs I've shot with it were all pass throughs. I wish one of the pigs hadn't been though bc that arrow was shot at ground level with a swampy pond in the background. Arrow disappeared through the pig never to be seen again.

I had a set of the 6mm three or four seasons ago and shot grim reapers on them. They held up great I thought.

When I started thinking about FOC and KE, they didn't make a 6mm in the spine I needed. Also, with me swapping to fixed heads, my local shop had cut my 6mm too short for them. So I swapped to the 5mm. I have had one break on me when I shot one of the pigs. All but about 6in was sticking out the other side and when he took off he broke it off

Any arrow would've bitten the dust in that situation.

I'm really liking the Black Eagle half-out on my Axis, but my next set will be getting either the Day 6 treatment or some Ethics components.
