I guess I am old now too.

1) You cant hide your scent. It is bullshite. You can kill big bucks opening day, during the rut, and if u r very very lucky other days. Use the wind, save the money on those 200 dollar scent block suits. They are not worth it. (Yes I have them too btw.)

Don't believe me, myth busters proved it right here.

I try to smell like tree by covering myself in real pine oil. Works well and is a lot cheaper. One of best hunters I know just hangs a pine car scent tree.

You can try to minimize your smell, bath, make sure to use unscented soaps, deodorants, and washing powder but will not matter if u don't hunt the wind.

In the rut they are too horned to notice, opening day is harder.

2)Deer can pattern u too. Hunt the middle of the day during runt etc. They see you coming and going too.

3)Learn to rattle, it works great once u master it.

4)If u are in climber, go over 20 foot.

5)there is no substitute for time in the woods.

Always put doe piss on your boots and drag line, in and out use it as cover scent.

It is actually Ok if u have to piss in the woods, do it downwind, and mix your piss with doe piss, or ustersus in the runt.

Find and hunt scrape lines, during pre rut and rut. use your cameras to get movement times.

Relax in the woods, mediate, etc become part of your surroundings. I have no clue why this works but it does. Maybe you give off something when u are hyper vigilant.

Don't ever shoot first buck if u have 20 to 30 minutes left.

Make your ringtone a bird or cricket sound or something.

Don't burn out early. 90% of your time hunting should be in the rut.

Kill does now or as soon as possible, and always leave them a lone on a few food plots.

Morton Pool salt is 5 bucks a 40 pound bag and makes a great licking block.

Rice bran plus powered sugar, brown sugar, vanilla, and grape koolaid is deer crack.

Sweet potato anything is also deer crack. That damn horse feed is the bomb.

Dont ever let them see u coming out of stand or shooting house. I use a doe warning call a few minutes before I get out to clear the field.

Every damn heard has a spotter doe, or buck that is skittish as hell and looking to make u. Kill that Sob as soon as possible as its job is to frick u up.

If u are using a climber don't ever do same tree twice in same year.

Deer are terrified of coyote howls.

I've watched deer come out of the woods along a creek bed to feed in a pasture. I went around and walked up the creek bed to their trail. Started howling like a coyote and the deer spooked and came running back to their crossing. Shot a spike at about 3 yards using that tactic

They were spooked because the heard a guy hollering in the woods. Not coyotes. They're obviously aware of coyotes but I have them in my foodplot, having yotes cut up all around and they don't budge.

Their ears are much more keen then yours and they know when a human is yelling.

My grandfather was the best Hunter I've known and a marine sniper, he told me 4 things about hunting that have always stuck with me.

1) Hunt the wind, no matter what, hunt the wind.
2) Take 3 deep breaths and squeeze the trigger while exhaling.
3) Don't drink and hunt. Gunpowder and alcohol don't mix. If you wanna drink then go fishing.
4) If their chasing does get your arse on a stand.

Pop's Rules

2. You must be present to win.
3. Make the wind your friend.
4. Never underestimate the importance of luck. (But it is true that the harder you work, the luckier you get.)
5. Let him grow so he can grow.
6. It's not over until it's over. Hunt to the end. (of the day, of the season)
7. It's acceptable to think of sex when you are on the stand. (But human semen is not considered to be an attractant or cover scent.)
8. Always carry something out you didn't carry in. (Pick up trash - keep America beautiful.)
9.Patience, patience patience.
10. When you are hot and sweaty, cold, soaking wet, sleepy and mosquito bitten remember how much fun you are having and always say Thanks!
Rule #1. Never shoot Pop!

Always check the fence after a hunt. If you find a hole, repair asap.

An older guy at work that retired a few years back used to come in a few days a week and do some consulting and training. He walked in one time as some coworkers and myself were looking at an aerial map of the club I had recently joined, we were looking at the area I had walked through and dropped some pins thinking about stand locations and entry points. He sat down and listened for a bit, then followed with this.

"Y'all are over thinking this whole thing. If you want to kill plenty of deer, hunt a place that has plenty of deer. If you want to kill big deer hunt a place that has plenty of big deer."

"It's the same thing with anything from fishing to duck hunting, or bringing a girl back to the house. You don't go to a biker bar at 2:00 in the afternoon looking to bring home a super model."

"This hunt the wind, wear all this camouflage using scent free soap is all great once you get there but the most important part is being at a good location and being out there."

I would have to disagree. I have killed multiple bucks out of the same tree in a climber in numerous years. As a matter of fact, one year I killed three bucks in three consecutive hunts out of the same tree.
