Looking for a nice set up to jig for red snapper. I’d like to get a pair and keep the total cost under $2200. I’m not a big fan of spinning reels. TIA

jig for red snapper

- what kind of jigging do you want to do? Traditional high-speed butterfly jigging? Or slow-pitch jigging? The type of jigging you're after will determine the equipment you need.

- do you want spinning or conventional setups?
- Does star vs lever drag matter to you?
- And what about a level wind?
- will this be a dedicated jigging setup or will it be multipurpose?

2200 lol what!

My newest rig is a Avet G2 JX with a custom 5'8" jigging rod I built. 284 for the reel and 100 for the rod.

Jigging for red snapper sounds pretty miserable. I’ve done it before but it isn’t much fun.

Dude I think I spent like $250 on my best snapper setup. Penn fathom 25w and a $35 rod from cabelas. And that thing is overkill. You just need a broomstick with a reel on it.

That’s why I’m asking for advice. Not super aware of prices given that I’m not sure what to get.

I’d prefer for 2 setups be for jigging and maybe 2 for trolling.

I didn’t know there were different types of jigging. Forgive my ignorance but I’m willing to get educated.

I definitely do not want spinning reels.
I perfect lever drag

Look at the avets super simple mid tier reels. We have gone way down in size on our snapper rigs. We do jig sometimes but I like a medium action jigging rod just because it's fun to fight a fish when the rod bent over. I hate super fast action that doesn't have any bend, when bottom fishing.

shimano tekota on a 5.5’ MH stand up rod is a great combo. You can free line, drop light or drop heavy and work most fish out of the rig on good 80# or so braid

Fin-nor lethal 100 reel and a decent jigging rod. 250-350 total each depending on rod. Reel has more drag than most people can handle and a spinning setup makes jigging fun.

Just get an electric reel they’re way more convenient and you can sip your beer while the reel does all the work.

The first question is really is this only a snapper rod or will you target things like grouper and AJ's and small tuna?

Because I find that most people WAY over tackle for just snapper. A 10-15 size reel is more than adequate for most snapper.

Personally Id get two combos first and go from there. Get a lighter combo and a heavier combo. Something like a 10-15 size reel and a 25-30 size reel for AJ's, grouper, and small tuna. I'd go with something like an Avet MX for smaller and Avet JX for bigger.

ETA; I meant to say, the thing about snapper is that they are usually higher in the water column and rarely will "wreck" you. So a smaller reel with less drag works great and is a lot easier to manage and more fun IMO.

These bottom reels are all absurd with line capacity these days. Most reels with 25+ lbs of drag have a 400+ yard capacity of line, you are fishing in 200 ft of water or whatever most of the time. Its unnecessary to have 2000 ft of line on a reel.

That's a good place to start. Do you have any equipment currently? And what're you mostly targeting while trolling? If it's blackfin, mahi, wahoo with the occasional YFT, then I recommend the Shimano Speedmasters in the 25 size. Spool with 80lb braid for capacity and a top shot of mono for a shock absorber. The big 50w and 80w gold reels (pick your brand - shimano tiagra or penn international) are awesome but probably unnecessary unless you plan to specifically target billfish or yellowfin tuna regularly and are also so large as to be dedicated setups with little versatility. For trolling rods, the Shimano Talevera rods are nice ($180).

Moving on to jigging setups, for lever drag options you probably start with the Daiwa Saltist LD ($250) and then can go up to the or the Accurate Valiant Boss 500 ($500+). For rods, the Shimano Trevala ($150) and Grappler series ($300) are great for traditional butterfly jigging but for dedicated slow pitch setups I'd look at the smaller manufacturers like Temple Reef. They have rods at different price points but they're all top notch.

Get You a Penn Tiger Lite rod in 6'-6 1/2' MH action and a Penn 30 squall LW or Shimano Tekota 700 with 50# Ande mono..

I prowl the pawn shops and find great deals.. Het the reels cleaned and repaired if needed. Also Ebay and Louisiana Sportsman Mag classified.

As others have said Avett makes a great reel. I also have some Shimano Speedmasters (12 & 16) that i use for snapper but also trolling.

If you want lightweight jigging reels, i use shamino 700s with 60 pound braid on trevala rods. About 500 a piece.

Trolling trolling shimano 330 two speeds on whatever rod u like with 80 braid . Around 500 too

Jigging period is miserable for AJS/blackfin etc. For jigging usually for blackfin for chunk bait use daiwa saltist 2 speed on a shimano trevala. Shimano torium is a great budget reel as well. For snapper I would use cut squid mix with a pogie on it and tanacom 1000 or fresh live threadfin/baby hardtails for big boys...All of our bottom fishing now is done with electric reels saves so much time and effort and puts meat in the box so can head further south for pelagics. Trolling wise we just use TLD 50s and have had no issues catching yft up to 180 pounds and have caught ands hooked marlin as well. 80 pound braid to 80 mono top shot on pinnacle rods. Cant go wrong with pinnacle on tht. Dont get addicted to bad as tackle and gear gets expensive QUICK......LOL

We started using a banex electric reel for our black fin lol. Braid straight to a diamond jig, with a blinky light right above the jig. Let it fall on freespool til it stops, and lock it up and give her the beans.

We did it once when we were drunk and bored about a year ago, and ended up loading the boat with all the black fin you could ever want. It’s our new go-to for getting cut bait now lol.
