It is pretty standard to sight them at 100 yards. You have to then adjust by using a holdover at CQB range. Conventional wisdom and all that.

This article discusses this very issue:

Zero distance for home defense AR-15

ETA: This article covers holdovers being mandatory for the platform at close range.

100 seems kinda far

I do the 50/200 zero on all my 223 ARs. At that range you are never off my more than 2' from 10 yards all the way to 200 yards.

50/200 zero

The article I cited also mentions this as an alternative.

The long and short (pardon the pun) of the 100 yard zero is that the bullet path never rises above LOS. Makes decent sense when one thinks about it. So, I would go 100 OR 50/200, unless there are damned good reasons to do otherwise.

What's the cheapest I can get one if these for? Obviously, I've played too much CoD in my day.

just seems that without a zoom, it would be hard to see 200 yds to sight it in or shoot something accurately...

I'll have to play with it a little and see what I prefer, thanks for the info

I would advise against EOTech. L3 systems has had issues that they knew about but didn't fix which is the reason for their huge recall right now. Go Aimpoint.

You don't sight it in at 200 yards. You sight it in at 50 yards. If you are using an unmagnified or low magnification optic IMHO the 50 yard zero is the way to go.

makes sense, you know where you want it to be at 50 to be on at 200...

Frank Proctor 50yd zero at 10yds

I have found this to be very useful, I've confirmed my zero out to 200yds with this.

You need to get out and practice more if you are shooting 2 foot groups at 10 yards.

I think with old eyes, a 2x-7x or 3x-9x would almost be a necessity to shoot well that far. Nutnfancy debunked the notion you can't use magnification for CQB.

It's over 30 minutes, relatively unedited, but a fun vid with Nutnfancy and his son comparing red dot to scope on an AR.

I am brand new to the 300 blk myself. I just picked up some remington 120 gr at wally world for $16/20 rnds and was a little pissed when i took them out the box and noticed that the primers are crimped. I think i am just going to suck it up and order some new hornady brass for reloading. I have my rcbs dies and shell holder on the way from amazon right now. Where did you find your barnes Vor-Tx? My local academy doesn't have it.

I reload my own .300. The most expensive part is of course the bullet. I've been using 208gr Hornady V-max with around 9 grains of IMR 4227. Might be off on that a little but it shoots great.

Not sure if you are aware but you can get a swage tool and fix primer crimp no problem.

Also, if you aren't aware on .300 you can cut down .223/5.56 brass (basically at the shoulder), then run it
through the sizing die and then trim it.
I can find all the .223/5.56 one could want at my range and pick up a bunch. I've probably trimmed 100 or more .223/5.56 to make .300aac

I don't know much about them but the holographic sight is for close quarters. The scope in the back is for magnification for longer shots but you still use the reticle on the holographic sight for aiming. You can see the lever below the scope that releases and allows it to fold over to the side out if your view for the holo sight.
