Thanks for the replys
what about the twist ratio in the barrel? say I go with a 20-24" barrel, is there any specific thing I should look for or stay away from?
was thinking a stock similar to this
+ I have a nice little plinker AR I put together and just want something that I could use long range. I have property where I could take 600 yard shot no problem. What would be the furthest shot you could consistently make with 5.56 round ya think? What grain bullet would you use for long range shooting? If you were building a long range rifle on an AR platform, would you use a different caliber? maybe 6.5 grendel or 6.8 spc?
Ace, you mentioned there a a number of things you would do differently than an MK12, can ya give a few examples?

Go 1:7 twist. You will want to shoot heavy bullets. Also, check out the new LMT precision stock (DMR556). It is better than the Magpul PRS.

I would look at 20" barrel options (maybe longer). I would definitely go with a newer, 2-stage trigger (although the Knight would be fine - a Geissle will probably find its way into my long range AR) and there are far more optics available now than when the Mk12 standardized.
Just off the top of my head.

Just buy a national match AR and put a scope on it.

I echo this, generally. If you know you're going to be firing mil-spec - and mil-spec ONLY, in 55gr and 62gr, then, a 1:8 or 1:9 would be fine. But, if you're going to shoot any amount of match grade ammo heavier than 62gr, then I would just go with the 1:7 and shoot heavier bullets most of the time out of the long range or SPR build. And 1:7 is generally okay down to about 55 grain, too.
I'm only considering 1:7 and 1:8 for my builds. I don't shoot a lot of light or specialty rounds and have a lot of military surplus ammo (or, at least I did before the volcano.)

Shooting it a long way
I don't know, I'm just one of those guys who enjoys shooting more than building. Although I have built before and will definitely do again in the future.

I'm probably more the other way - shooting is more expensive than building - that's the sad reality in 2016.

ill let yall know when i start putting this thing together
my Rock River Arms stage 2 trigger will be arriving on Friday, going to drop that in my current AR and see how big of a difference that makes. pretty pumped

If you are shooting for accuracy, especially at distance, you want to shoot .223 and not 5.56, if you are married to that caliber bullet. I would recommend using 77gr SMKs loaded by a reputable manufacturer, I like Black Hills, if you are not hand loading. If you want to shoot consistently tight groups at distance you probably want to get into hand loading.
I built an AR platform rifle in 6.5 Grendel with a barrel cut by Saturn and it is a tack driver.

Wisdom from that thread:
If you shoot light bullets fast enough, through a fast twist barrel, they will turn into a cloud of lead dust. This is a real concern - don't buy a 1:7 24" for shoo(t)ing thin-jacketed 40gr varmint bullets at high velocities. Shorter barrels (with lower velocities) and more robust bullets make this a non-issue.

$23.50 for the FSB and $50 if you want me to pin it to the barrel for you. I do not know if you already have a front sight post kit (sight post, spring and plunger), but you will need that as well. I am currently out of stock on those.
Will the FSB come with the taper pins and set screws?

This is my 6.8 20" barrel
Works great as a deer gun for a little one as well. It has the Magpul PRS stock.

If I do the install the taper pins are included (there are no set screws in that setup). If you want to buy some they are $2 each, you will need 2. Shoot me an email if you want to discuss further.

I am looking to replace the carbine buffer that came with my lower with a H3 buffer. Is there any way to do this without buying an $80 tool?

I just got my CMMG 300 blk upper last week and can't wait to put a few rounds through it. Going to use it as a deer rifle for next season where my max shot will be 100 yds. Any of you with a 300 blk try the sig elite 125gr rounds? Going to end up loading for it but want to get some factory rounds just to shoot and save the brass.

This bad advice keeps popping up. If it wasn't for the requirement to shoot M856 tracer which is a very long bullet for its weight (and length of the bullet matters a lot when choosing a twist rate to stabilize it) the Army would be using 1:9 twist barrels which will stabilize 75gr OTM's just fine.

There is no special tool necessary to swap a buffer. Just depress the retaining pin and it will all pop out (buffer and spring).
