Because of the pinned flash hider I am looking for a 2 piece rail. I see some come that hide the existing delta ring. Some don't.
You might not need a 2 piece rail if you build the upper. When I had a 14.5", I had all the parts and sent them to ADCO. They used the barrel nut from my forearm and a lopro gas block then pinned the muzzle device. Got to use really whatever I wanted.
Even then if you buy a barrel already pinned with a standard barrel nut, a crap ton of rail systems use the factory barrel nut. Only thing if you get it with an A2 front site you will need to shave it down.

Building it is not the issue. Once together, if it is a one piece, I will never be able to replace the rail without un pinning the flash hider. This is because of the front sight block sight post will have to be removed tonget the rail off.
Dont plan on changing it up, but rails evolve over time and or it may get damaged. With a two piece rail, I will not have to remove anything but the rail.

You can always replace the rail with another that uses a standard barrel nut as long as you use a low profile gas block or shaved A2 front site. You can still change rails everyday if they use the standard barrel nut. Troy, Vtac, Samson, Daniel Defense, Midwest Industries, fortis, centurion all make rails that use the standard barrel nut.
Ive had a 14.5" and still use the same rail system that was on it. I just bought a new barrel nut I get they change, guess I found one that works and am sticking with it.

Only if you use an A2 front site and you can shave it down to slip the rail over if you want to.

Okay - moving forward with a build up from a stripped, mil-spec (in lieu of buying a Ruger AR556, which was under consideration). I want to pick the thread's brain about some basics.
Sticking with all the lower points, first:
First, I'm pretty much settled on Magpul MOE furniture, probably in FDE. Should I cerakote the lower or leave it black anodized? I'm okay with the aesthetics either way.
Second, I've tracked a lot of the discussion on triggers - do Timney, Giselle and CMC have the consensus best triggers? I'm thinking I might want to 2-stage, but not completely sold on the need for a $250 or $300 trigger. Is Timney the best bang-for-buck on a single stage trigger that will be similar to, but an upgrade from a military trigger?
Third - I'm probably going mil-spec buffer - unless someone has a good reason not to.
Fourth - are all the spring/pin kits pretty much the same? There are few options if you are going your own way with trigger and pistol grip . In other words, get those $25 kits on sale? Or is there a better way.
As far as tools, blocks, etc., anybody have some wisdom, "I wish I had known to get X block or Y pin pusher before my first build" type gems?
Thanks in advance.

Geissele makes awesome two stage triggers I have a SSA-E on my AR and love it.
I got a Reaction Rod and used it when assembling DownSouthDave's AR. It really worked well for torqueing down barrel nut and muzzle device.

As you said, strictly aesthetics. If it's your first build I'd probably stick with plain anodized for now (can always come back and cerakote). I know I went back and forth on much of the aesthetic stuff my first go round.

Not sure on price of the Timney, but the ALG ACT is a great upgrade as far as standard trigger at a good price (can be had for around $50).

The JP silent captured spring is pricey but worth every cent imo.

For the most part. One thing I have found is that the safety lever in some kits can be gritty, and not as crisp to flip (example, in my experience cmmg sucks compared Daniel defense in this aspect).
Tool wise, they're all not necessarily a necessity, however they do make it easier and less likely to gouge/scratch your receiver. Some roll pin punches and holders along with a vise block are helpful.

Depends on how your rifle setup (gas block hole size in the barrel, gas system length, etc). Heavier buffer runs smoother and you get less perceived recoil. Unless the gas hole is undersized or the gas block misaligned I've yet to see a setup that didn't operate reliably with an H2 buffer with less impulse.

You can buy kits that have spiral roll pins instead of standard roll pins. Spiral pins are stronger and are much easier to insert than a standard roll pin.

I use a laser line level to line up my gas block and time my brake. Works great. I wouldn't go out and buy one to do it but if you have one handy it's nice to get everything lined up correctly.

Bought my first ar lower yesterday. A spikes tactical with the American flag etching. Just ordered my lower build kit from palmetto state armory with od green magpul moe furniture. Now i have to decide on an upper. I'm torn between 300blk and 5.56. I want to go at least a 16 inch barrel, as it look like I won't be suppressed for at least a year.
Has anyone heard of zeroed in armory out of pearland tx?

If this will be your only AR get a .300blk. If this is the 1st of many go ahead and get the 5.56.

I wouldn't go two stage unless you are planning on long range shooting. If you plan on mostly 300 or less I'd go with a high quality single stage.

If I'm just shooting paper and steel I would go 556 all the way.
And if you do go 300 BO don't be like a couple of the idiotic mall ninjas around here and try to hunt deer with your suppressed 300 BO using subsonic ammo.

Pulled the trigger on a DD M4V11 about a week ago. Thinking about getting a scope and have been recommended the Vortex Viper PST 1-4.
What do y'all think before I go with it?
