Diesel? Under the hood Pass side on the fender towards the front is a vacume pump. The hard lines (plastic) going into the pump will crack and cause what you are describing.

anything past an 04 model has all electric actuators, including 4x4's. OP either has a bad Mode door actuator or the shaft coming off the mode door to the actuator has broken. The shaft is made of composite plastic.
ETA-The shaft coming out of the mode door actuator is plastic. The door itself has a socket that sometimes cracks just allowing the shaft coming from the actuator to spin freely.

the actuator can be seen on the side of the heater case, just to the right of your gas pedal. While turning the mode selector knob back and forth look to see if the actuator is moving at all.If it is and you're still not getting the desired results then something has become dislodged and is holding the mode door stuck or the socket at the bottom of the door that the mode actuator goes into has broken.

Actuator looks like this

if it's not the actuator then you're looking at over a grand. And that's being polite

i hear ya. I've done a bunch of those jobs and it doesn't get any easier the more you do. Just a pain in the arse.Sharp shite all in there cutting you to shreds. Most shops won't do a mode door for under $1200.
frick,I won't touch it myself for less than $1000.
Hope it's just your actuator dude.

Didn't know they switched to electric's after 2004. That's good to know. And I'm thanking God I'm OT poor and have a 2003 and it was free to fix my "defrost only" problem!

My '06 f150s ac vents aren't cycling when I turn the switch

Demon, I have an '05 doing the exact thing. Did yours worsen over time, or did it just go tits up? Mine would blow through the vents when I would get to high-way speed, or let off the gas in town. When the engine was under load it would go to defrost. Yesterday, it wouldnt even blow through the vents with no load on the engine.

Mind died quick. It worked on Tuesday, Wednesday it was gone. The fan still blows hard but its just on my feet.

Meauxjeaux, side note, how do I get the panel on my drivers door off so I can put the window switches back where they're supposed to be? I hit them too hard and pushed them down into the handle.

There were a few 05's that still used vacuum on certain build dates. Check to see if you have a vacuum line running behind your battery along the fender.

You're going to need to google "06 F150 drivers door panel removal"

Look for a picture that shows the screw locations and the plastic lock pins. It's pretty easy.

Check the vacuum lines going to your front hubs.I have an 07 and it did it too until I found the leaker. Its a pretty easy fix once you find the line thats cracked...Lots of info online about this issue on the F250's

One of the things I fixed on mine was a vacuum leak. Every part that "switches" on the 4wd is vacuum actuated. Actually turned out to be one of my hubs and not a vacuum line like I thought

I'd assume it isn't much different than a F250. I'll help you out if I ever make it up there. They actually just pop in and out of some clips

Ygm also

Yeah. Just pop the thing out and push them back in. I wouldn't even have to take the door panel off to do that on mine

It could be a broken clip under there though, in which case you should be able to get another little panel deal from Ferd

I dont think it's broke, I just pushed real hard on it and it popped down. The back passenger button wasn't making contact, probably from dirt and it would go down, but not up. I was pushing down and wiggling it trying to make it make contact and it just popped out. So the door handle just pops straight out?

Not the handle, but the part with the buttons should. I can't imagine it being much different than the ones in an F250. Even if it is, the whole door panel takes two minutes to get off
