Very likely a valve train issue. Lifter, rocker, valve spring, something related to that displacement on demand crap.

If the piston or rings were not sealing and you were losing compression that way, I bet the engine would sound like shaking a can of rocks.

Could you pressurize the cylinder with an air compressor and listen for air at the tailpipe or intake? It'd tell you if it's a valve and what side.

I wonder how much if a ding I am looking at if I try to sell it as is.

Shop is telling me roughly 2500 in labor to pull heads just to see what is all wrong. fricking BS.

I’d replace all the AFM mechanical parts and drive it to 300k, esp since you just put a transmixer in it.

Pulling the heads would not be too bad, plus if you’re going to farm for a living you need to get some experience fixing on raggedy shite.

They want 2500 just in labor to pull the heads. If you pull the heads then you might as well change all the parts And hope the Cam isn't bad and also probably have to machine the head. That all will be as much as just getting a new reman motor drop in. I am having some of my connections back in Louisiana run options and prices to see if it is worth having the truck shipped back home to be worked on.

Ford putting the AFM on the 5.0 has really screwed up screwed up plans for a future truck.

Had a 2017 with the 5.3 and AFM. After reading about the issues with the valve train @100K that they all seem to have I traded it in for a 21’ with the 3.0 liter diesel. (Baby Duramax)

Best move I ever made. Love the 3.0 ltr/10 spd combo and gas mileage avgs 25 daily and 30-31 hwy. Gets 19-20 towing a full size Basscat in hilly terrain.

Wouldn’t hesitate to consider that swap if I were in your shoes

I have heard nothing but good things about the 3.0s but man I have a bad taste in my mouth about the GMs. The transmission and lifters are admitted well known issues and they don't do shite about making them right.

I feel like houston would be a Mecca for getting a decent LS motor. A lot of guys selling them here are driving to Houston to get them. I would not pay $2500 to get anything in that motor diagnosed, or even fixed. You can buy a motor for that.

I haven’t had problems with mine but I know so many people that have had the known issues that it definitely has put a bad taste in my mouth.

Because baws still buy them. I think you’ll take a beating if you sell out your in it’s current condition.

Diablo Sport makes one that I have used on two different trucks in the 2008-2013 era. It just plugs into the OBD port and leave it. Did what it was supposed to do. Same one may fit the 2014 and later. Check them out.

No compression in a cylinder means either a valve is not sealing or the rings for that cylinder are not sealing, possibly from a burned piston.

Could it not just be a collapsed lifter?

You would have valve train noise if the lifter were collapsed or lost a cam lobe. A very audible tap.

Is it worth spending the money to find out exactly what all is wrong or just go with a reman or used motor?

Currently leaning towards whatever is the cheapest and get rid if the truck as soon as I can. Will need new tires and front-end suspension work in the near future.

$2500 just to pull the head is a bit extreme.
I would pay him for what he has done and haul it home. Get a second opinion.

Good call. Bad injectors are fairly common on this generation. Possibly one malfunctioned and flooded/washed that cylinder. How is the oil level? Is it over full? Does it smell like fuel? Definitely get someone else you trust to diagnose.

That is problem, moved to Houston from LA in July, I don't know anyone I can trust. I even contemplated getting it shipped back to LA.
