The scariest looking non-poisonous snake I've ever seen is the mud snake:

yeah that was a crazy afternoon. a little fishing trip on my buddy's land turned into some target practice. we saw probably 50 snakes in the three ponds we were fishing. i'm not sure what kind of snakes they are or whether or not they are poisonous. it makes no difference to me... if its a snake, i'm killing it.

it was probably a half acre pond and it seemed like they were pretty evenly spaced out throughout the pond. it felt like they were moving towards us no matter where we were fishing from.

on second thought, those appear to be diamondback Water Snakes.
Thought you were saying they were diamondback rattlers.

The most common snake on any water I've ever been on. Bayou Robert in Ellic was teaming with them when i was a kid. Broad banded were not as common. Then we had the drab green/grey water snakes that I had trouble identifying.

Nothing more unnerving than having a diamond back water snake try to climb into your kayak with you
...well maybe a gator trying to climb in with you would be a bit more unnerving...

We usually kill a few snakes a year around our house. I'll start taking pics. I killed a water mocassin last year in my back yard. It was really dry and I guess he was looking for water since the creek that runs behind my house had dried up. I was cutting the grass and damn near ran him over. He was striking at the cutter. Instead of getting blood and guts all over my new John Deere I blasted him with ole Bessie.

My uncle's propert is on Hwy 43 nine miles north of Hwy 26. His land has frontage on the Pearl River. There are certainly Easterns on the other side of the river from his place.

Caught this indigo over the Christmas holidays when it was cold (I'm 6' tall). Saw a 7-footer the next day when it was warm but he bit my boot twice so I gave up on catching him for a snapshot.
