NRA Carry Guard - New CCW Insurance (What's the OBs opinion?)

It's basically an insurance policy that reimburses you for the legal fees and what not that goes into a defensive shooting. The prices seem reasonable, but selecting a particular package is the tough part. How much would legal counsel and the court costs along with a civil suit actually cost?
They had a virtual reality "game" that simulated a convenience store robbery. Once you shoot the perp, it shows you being arrested and taken downtown for questioning.
The program offers training videos along with free coverage for your spouse. They even offer coverage for your kids if they have to defend themselves within the home.

It's a LOT easier than you think to spend $50k on legal fees.

Everything I own is through an llc and I have an attorney or retainer. Same attorney who established my trust. Pennies on the dollar.

I'm a member of the Armed Citizens' Legal Defense Network. It pays $10,000 if you're involved in a self-defense shooting (not enough for a full blown defense if you're indicted, but enough to bail you out of jail and/or retain an attorney).
Depending on circumstances, they might pony up more resources (the $10k is guaranteed) to help, but it's very much dependent on the specifics of your case.
Their main functions are to help you find experienced attorneys, find world class expert witnesses, and provide educational materials (DVD's, books) that will (hopefully) enable you to avoid having to use your gun in the first place.

If a person is on trial for shooting someone, the charge is likely to be murder, or attempted murder. Chances are, a responsible gun owner is not going to qualify for public defender, so he/she will be hiring a private lawyer.
A murder trial trial is very involved and can take a year or two to get to trial.
For a few reference points:
8 hours x $200 = $1600
40 hours x $200/hr = $8,000
Assume a 40 hour work week (which is light for a lawyer).
An attorney defending a responsible gun owner in a murder trial can easily spend more than 6 weeks of time on a trial.
You'd probably also have to hire an expert or two as well ($5k-$10k).

I have worked with a couple of real deal crim defense attorneys (not car wreck guys taking a shooting case) and know what they charge. A "run of the mill" homicide case is going to be at least $50k and something high-profile is going to cost between $75 and $100k.
These type of attorneys will quote a flat rate and want the money up front. They don't do hourly because of the sheer amount of time they will be spending on the case. The figures above no NOT include investigators, expert witnesses, private labs, etc.

I'd hate to know that if I needed to defend myself with a gun, I'd spend the rest of my life in prison for doing so.
