If you’re serious about elk, get in the best shape of your life
I damn sure wish I was still built like 18 year old downshift. Its a real asswhipping stomping the mountains. 3 miles of those yellow/red trails is brutal. Get off the trails and frickkkkkkkkkk it sucks.

Elk tastes much better than whitetail.
In my opinion, it’s the best tasting meat you can get
Better than beef? Does it have much gaminess to it.

IMO yes
Elk is the best meat I’ve ever eaten

For example you can hunt right above the town of Crested Butte but it is steeeep hike and 5-10 hour climb up. You have to go up and cold camp or you run the elk out. There are places like this up and down the Rockies.
I'd much rather do this. I also have quite a bit of gear because we do backpacking and lots of camping. I go to Colorado every year. Lots of great info from everyone. Thanks. Definitely going to plan a trip for next year.

Note that your backpacking gear might not work for hunting elk. I have a whole ultralightweight setup and it’s basically useless hunting ek/mulies in October.

On that note, spend the money the first time. Get a good pack. Mystery Ranch Metcalf, EXO K3, Kifaru, Stone Glacier, etc.
Goes the same for all the gear. The resale market is very active. You can probably find good used gear and also sell the gear if you decide it's not for you.

Definitely. Resale is insane on this gear. If you hate it or want to upgrade, can seemingly get like 90% or your money back.

Yep.
Lots of people buy all new gear for a trip, use it for a week, then sell it.
Which seems crazy to me, but many do it.
Basically the only reason I keep FB these days are the buy and sell groups.

“Bought this $3,500 spotting scope. Never used it except for once in my backyard. Will ship to your door for $3,200.”

I got a Maven CS.1 for $500 shipped. Couldn't tell it had been used before
Posted on 9/20/21 at 11:28 am to mylsuhat
I just got my CS.1 in. Seems legit. Little hazy past 40x

Diy public land hunts suck in Colorado
This project landlocked hunt highlights some of the landlocked public, it’s a cool video. It is a little frustrating when you see a giant piece of public surrounded by private. Public private issues are everywhere.
Fly in hunt on landlocked public

Thats been my experience. Trying to come up with a different plan

The federal government owns about 35 percent of the state’s nearly 67 million acres, the vast majority of which are open to the public for recreation.

300,000 landlocked acres
I wouldn’t say that 1% of public lands being locked by private makes CO public hunting “suck”
Coming from La, the amount of free land to do pretty much whatever you want on is glorious.
If anything, the whole “wilderness” deal in Wy is a much bigger PITA

I could somewhat understand it if it was Grizz country only but that's not the case

I buy like 95% of my gun/hunting stuff used. Can get some fantastic deals. I also buy most of my scopes when they go clearance. I like new gear, and somethings I will buy new. But a lot of people dont even understand how their gear works and then they sell it for something new. Those are my kind of people.

Man I buy and sell constantly on rokslide and archerytalk. I’m sure people get burned but I love it.

I've done a good bit of hunting out west, mainly Colorado.
Depends on your budget. If you can book a guided hunt, do that. OTC elk in Colorado is extremely tough. Lots of people. Do you want any legal elk, or a chance at a good elk?
All of the states are different when it comes to draws though. Some do points, some don't.
