Both, hard hunting and no elk. When I went there in 2019 I got into elk 6 different hunts and didn’t have a legal bull any of the 6 times. So I’ll take that over 2018 when we didn’t even see an elk in a field til the 8th day if hunting. Ended up missing a good bull at about 350 yards that year. I didn’t go in 2020, but the group did and it was back Shades if 2018. 9 days of hunting very few elk, lots of walking. That’s why I say hit or miss in that area. I will say with the few times I’ve been I learned A TON about elk and how to hunt them. When I get my next chance to go I’ll definitely feel more experienced.

There is a hell of a lot of public land to hunt regardless of the article. Of course most of it that is accessible by ATV or god forbid UTV is normally over hunted, over-driven, etc... you name it. If you don't mind hoofing it you can get above 99.5% of the public. Do your research and you can have peaceful quiet mornings when down below you can see blaze orange 300 to 800 yards apart everywhere.

For example you can hunt right above the town of Crested Butte but it is steeeep hike and 5-10 hour climb up. You have to go up and cold camp or you run the elk out. There are places like this up and down the Rockies.

Accessible to most people means car, truck, ATV, or UTV. Go into Gunnison and folks hunting using horses have take great Elk and Mule deer. They go where Joe Schmo and all his shite on his loud arse ATV or UTV can't go and run the animals off while he drives around at 20 minutes before shooting time looking for a place to hunt where he can sit on his front seat.

Been hunting Colorado for 23 years. Hunt Crested Butte/Gunnison, Flatrock (West close to Utah), and Meeker NW area. Public hunting in Meeker area is basically all accessible by 4 wheeler or UTV and it shows.

Year 1 - draw unit 0 points: drew back on 2 bulls. No shot

Year 2 - draw unit 0 points: drew back on 2 cows. Close. Just no clear shots.

Year 3 - OTC shot a cow day 1

Much respect for that. I’m not confident enough to go archery off rip. That’s definitely a goal of mine in the future.

I've been hunting elk since 2010. About 50% on filling tags.

Currently my group is sitting at 50% with a nice bull down. 1 miss. And another bull shot today looking for him.

Learning elk is a bitch period. But once you learn them, their patterns, how to approach hunts, winds, get the right gear, put in the 6 months prep, find people with the same mental fortitude as you,... then you can bring home meat every year within your group.

Today I've already done 8 miles and elevation changes of 2000ft. I've been in elk all day long.

I guess point being... get a guide to learn and increase percentage of gettinf meat.

Then decide if you want to do this regularly and buy the best gear 1x.

Elk pattern like ducks. Maybe better.

Universities have done research are elk ranges for years and years.

50 yr old research paper is how I'm on the elk herd I'm in today.

I bought an “expedited elk tag” in Wyoming a few years back. It was $1100 I think. It all but guaranties you are drawn. However out of state hunters must use a guide service… even on public land. Not sure if this has changed or not.

How is elk meat compared to typical venison/whitetail deer?

Here’s the plan

Build points now. You can still buy Wyoming points right now.
The first trip should be DIY antelope. Camp out and see how your gear works out. You’ll also see how your shooting is. If you like antelope, do all the rest.

I got into the points game years ago and have had fun.
Two DIY antelope for me and two for my son. Two DIY mule deer.
Guided bighorn ram, bull elk, and Muley.

Going with son and his buddy on easy to draw first season Colorado rifle elk soon.
Sitting on 10+ elk points for Colorado, Wyoming, and Arizona. Those hunts will all be DIY.

If you’re serious about elk, get in the best shape of your life. The physical and mental challenge is real.

Elk tastes much better than whitetail.

In my opinion, it’s the best tasting meat you can get

What is your plan for Colorado with 10 points? Seems like you either burn them around 5-6 points on a decent unit or wait until 20+. Not much in between.

Yep. No man’s land. I’ll have the time, so likely archery or muzzleloader.

KY Elk Hunting

Long time lurker here. Not sure if you're interested in elk hunting east of the Mississippi but Kentucky has had elk hunts for awhile now. I grew up in Harlan County in the SE corner of KY. Harlan County is bordered by Pine Mountain to the north and Stone Mountain to the South. Pine Mountain is covered up in elk while I have yet to see any on Stone Mtn.

Wyoming is draw only. Be sure you have land access to Unit areas in which you apply. Some public lands are landlocked and you can't cross private lands unless with written permission or paying a trespass fee.

Don't apply to an area then hope to get access after you draw. Do your homework. Hunting in bear and mountain lion country is a whole new ballgame. You can become the hunted.

Update: Purchase onxmaps for the state you wish to hunt. It is a necessity. It will list and show land parcels, both public and private, and can provide real time proof to green jeans you are not trespassing. Many ranchers and outfitters utilize public land(BLM and Nat Forests) and try to run you off by saying it's private land or they have the hunting rights, when all they habe is grazing rights. Onxmaps are a must. I download my maps to a Garmin gps unit, because cell phone service out their is spotty.

BLM = Bureau of Land Management not Black Lives Matter lol
