Can you buy a decent one for under $1,000 dollars. I do not need anything fancy just to shoot hogs at night.

If you can spend a little more I would go thermal. Like the AGM Rattler V2 TS35-384. It's around $1800.00. Perfect for hogs.

I was talking with someone in law enforcement and involved with SWAT and they said sometimes the trees and bushes can give off heat signatures and it’s tough to identify things.
He spoke very highly of a product that I will try to link. If I am unable to figure out how to link it I will just type the name out.

PSA will regularly have Pulsar scopes refurbished for about half price of new. I have 2 AGMs and they are okay but may try Pulsar next

I have an AGM Rattler, and for just shooting hogs under 200 yards, I couldn't imagine you would need anything more. Definitely not night vision for almost the same price.

I have the Agm rattler 320. It is hard to beat for$1195.

How easy is it to determine what you’re looking at with thermal?

I have killed a pile of hogs with a sightmark wraith. Paid around $500 for it. Recently upgraded my IR light to a sniper hog. I can see very clearly to 200 yds probably much more but that’s the farthest shot I have at my place. I agree thermal is a big step up but also in price

Sounds like they don't know what they are talking about or they are using some old tech thermals. I got an old FLIR monocular from Wildlife and fisheries on govdeals and it's pretty terrible compared to what is out there now. You can absolutely identify a hog in thick brush or trees with the newer thermals. I can see flying squirrels in a tree with my thermal. I will say there is a big difference in a 25mm vs 35mm. For the couple of hundred more dollars I would for sure go with the 35mm. Don't waste your money on the digital night vision stuff. The price is very tempting, but you will regret it in the long run. Speaking from personal experience on that.
Go check out outdoor legacy gear. They specialize in thermals for hunting, and the owners will talk to you about your specific needs and set you up with the best thermal for you.

I put a wraith on my PCP 22 air rifle. That’s a pigeon/armadillo/turtle killing combo. Use a cheapo Amazon focusable IR flashlight with rail adaptor.

Only real downside to the first gen one I have is the battery life is garbage on 4 AA maybe 2 hours or so. I use exertal battery packs now and get decent life it just add to the weight of the setup. I think the newer wraiths have built in rechargeable batteries.

Mine uses 123 and I've gotten pretty good life from them. I have the external pack deal from PSA a few years back. on a pellet rifle i really would like a rangefinder scope, those turtle heads are pretty small from 80 yards.

Distances you routinely shoot ? What platform ? AR or bolt action and what caliber ?
If you’re putting it on a suppressed 300 BO than any of the newer thermals in the $900-1500 range will be OK. Bolt action .308 class cartridge where you can shoot longer distances you need to spend at least 2X more $.
The models that look more like a traditional scope are easier to shoot from a bolt action.
